Agreed, I’ve only got a Raglan Little John lathe, it’s not perfect but more than adequate for my diy bodgery. Don’t understand how I lived without one

I've got a Myford ML7 & I use it regularly but there are times I get frustrated by its limited size.
But I would buy a Myford over a hobby lathe every time. You get a bigger size, better build quality & when time comes to upgrade you'll get your money back plus interest as they hold their value very well.
With the mini lathe you would likely lose a lot come resale time.
Unfortunately prices for any decent used lathe in NI are double what they are in GB. There's a guy in Ards that trades in Myfords but he's not cheap!

Anything but a Myford ml7 would be my choice - overpriced amateurs lathe. The Ml4, which was made by another supplier I can't recall would be pennies in comparison, and one I would contemplate. Boxford too.

Wasn't the ML4, it was just the M type. Drummond designed & produced initially, then Myford took over production in WWII.
I use a Drummond M. Nice machines.
Yes, my mistake, just had a look on ebay, half a doz on there, mostly around 3 to 5 hundred quid. Nice little things.

IMHO, here you need to include the thinking of a turner and not a welder. Reduce the diameter, press in the bushing and reduce the diameter again to the desired size. TIG will most likely bend the shaft due to temperature distortions.

Personally I would go for a Boxford or similar - make sure it has the screw cutting gearbox etc.

Have got a Viceroy lathe, similar to Boxford but bigger spindle bore, power feeds, and screwcutting gearbox. Also have a Colchester Mascot in a lean to, but that has a problem with accuracy at the moment.
Cannot do without either, rather like a welder. You will find all sorts of things to use it for.
Most of the time they make things to repair other things, which saves a lot of time, damage, and money.

As @Sergei Slovenija says I wouldn't TIG that shaft, looks a small motor and you'll probably do more damage with heat build up. Can't you bore the cog hole larger and fit a reducing sleeve then drill and ream to fit motor shaft?

There are larger models of Chinese lathes. Like Colchester Student, etc. The baby in question, like a cheap Chinese pole drill from the supermarket, seems to do the job, but... When I urgently needed a drilling machine, I bought it, bemoaning in advance future disappointment and wasted money today.

I agree, bigger is almost always better with lathes. But we don't all have that luxury, or budget.
An ML10 is a flexi noodle.
My first CNC lathe was based on one (@Hood had similar), and I'd much rather have something Chinese in that size/price range, that I could fettle into a far better machine.

My Chester Comet was 700 and a bit quid, delivered, when I bought it.
Been well worth it over the years I've had it.
There was a retired guy in the US who started posting stuff about what he'd done on his min-lathe, what improvements he made, and about new stuff he bought - offered honest reviews and Sieg even started to send him stuff for his opinion before it was fully on sale - I think this is him:

Myfords are very nice (and photgenic) But I'd rather have a Boxford.
We had Boxfords at my secondary school. And they weren't completely knackered after 30+ years of idiot boys messing about with them. That says a lot, to me.
There were a lot more of them sold with power feed and cross feeds, than there are myfords with similar capabilities.
Also they're a little bigger.
