This is my dads car so will have to ask him but the two reasons I thought were the a plus blocks were stronger than the original a series and he bought it as a stipped race engine and this was the block with it, so it wax sent to John speed with all the bits to be build. But as said I'm only guessingGot his book here.

Stronger is a moot point unless you're turbocharging to the limit. You need to persuade him to change it, the A plus will devalue it.This is my dads car so will have to ask him but the two reasons I thought were the a plus blocks were stronger than the original a series and he bought it as a stipped race engine and this was the block with it, so it wax sent to John speed with all the bits to be build. brilliant ,couldnt wait for the next one to come outMy big monthly read in the 60s Clive Trickey on building a Mini 7 racer. Ace!
To be honest he not going to changing it seeing as he's had the engine already built, and the cars we build aren't cars that are built for value, its built to be kept, my dad won't sell it and nor would I. Its also got a straight cut car and that would probably devalue it as nobody in there right mind wants a straight cut obx in a road car but it's what my dads always wanted so he bought it. It's not going to be a mint back to original rebuild its more to be a sort of period, road/rally car just something usable. I think that's the plan anyway. I will mention it to him but the project is no further on since 2020 we've been caught up in land rovers and novas. We'll get to it eventually. We've got another mini thst needs a fair amount of work but that one eill be g9ing back to mint orgional.Stronger is a moot point unless you're turbocharging to the limit. mk i mexico, sold first one for £1100, the second for £1250, which had a factory replacement engine after I blew the first oneFeeling your pain Bob, Mk1 Mex sold for £895!
Difficult to 'like' that!mk i mexico, sold first one for £1100, the second for £1250, which had a factory replacement engine after I blew the first one
it was actually a small profit at the time after I had run one for couple years , and similar loss on the other , but in those days you couldnt just put a car in a shed unless you were minted ehDifficult to 'like' that!
Fair enough, but the engine you have would pay for the replacement, and a straight cut box is not necessarily noisy - the 4 synchro Leyland ST one I had was indistinguishable from standard. Straight cut drops or diff is another matter...To be honest he not going to changing it seeing as he's had the engine already built, and the cars we build aren't cars that are built for value, its built to be kept, my dad won't sell it and nor would I. I completely understand what yiur saying, I personally think my dad is rebuilding his youth, as it had a 1275 in before and that was nice, I say I think what he's trying to do is rebuild something he would've had / liked back in the day he's done all the bigger mini engine and massive over bored then and blown them up. You say about selling trust me we're not good at selling stiff, we've had the mini about 15years already and he'd never sell it, and to be honest I'm sure one day I'll get it. And after we've built it together I'd hope I'll never be in a position to need to sell it either.Fair enough, but the engine you have would pay for the replacement, and a straight cut box is not necessarily noisy - the 4 synchro Leyland ST one I had was indistinguishable from standard. Personally, I would build an overbored 1100 on a close ratio GT box. I have two mk1 Morris coopers, one will have a big bore 1100, the other most likely a 1400 (with the rebuilt 998 in a crate in the workshop). The thing with minis, anything goes, whatever takes your fancy. But, classic cars are getting to be like houses now, you're only looking after them for the next owner...
