More fusion 360 (construction planes)

Been trying all day in between jobs ( and I have many) to get a really simple explanation of construction planes.
Imagine a cylinder 60mm diameter that is reduced by 10mm for a 50mm section in the center.

Two construction planes need creating 5mm apart so the length of the cylinder can be reduced in length by 5mm.

What are the key strokes or menu clicks to add those construction planes?

I can imagine loads of things that would fit that description - can you rustle up a sketch?

(You may or may not need to add a construction plane - likely not.)

Ignore the sizes but I was kindly sent how to achieve what I wanted

I removed the sound so not to confuse myself. But you can see the two construction planes created but I can't see the key strokes and I don't know how to add construction planes.

To answer the question asked, the person in the video created an offset plane (I think you need to set your own keyboard shortcut for this if you want one):

HOWEVER, it looks like the object of the exercise was to cut a slice out of the component to shorten it. Without knowing the context, that seems like a completely farse about ace way of using parametric modelling software - just go back to whatever specified the length (sketch or extrude, etc.) and change it to the length you want.

ETA: I guess this must be for an imported solid, in which case, it's fair game. (But to emphasise: if you have the parametric model, just go back and change a number).

It's because they were using a step file not a fusion 360 file.. it was imported into fusion by On offs lad.

I have tried using an offset plane but failed. Lol. I could have asked for the adjusted file but as its not an urgent rush now, I want to try and learn to do things myself.

I have tried using an offset plane but failed.

1) Click 'Offset Plane' (circled in red under the 'Construct' group in my previous post.

2) Click the feature in the model that you want to use as a reference (the face of the larger diameter at the bottom of the part in your video)

3) Click 'OK'

That gets you the first plane.

Repeat steps 1-3 and enter '5mm' into the offset box before clicking OK. (Change to -5mm if the preview moves the wrong way).

That gets you another plane offset by 5mm from the first.

(The first two steps probably work either way around.)

...or just re-draw the part in Fusion and make it the size you want it to be.

Now that I see the screen shot, I would start a sketch on a plane, draw the outline, revolve it, add the threads, sketch on end to do the keyed splined looking part.

It's because they were using a step file not a fusion 360 file..

I assumed the same, but was able to easily change the length of a step file part using the standard extrude function.

I think @Misterg was suggesting a value in the time line could be altered.
I am guessing using a step file does not provide that facility in Fusion.

The whole point of parametric modelling (be it Fusion, FreeCAD, OnShape, Solidworks, etc...) is that the design is defined by the parameters used to create it (rather than how it looks), and these remain editable - if something is the wrong length, don't add another operation to shorten it; go back to the sketch (or whatever) that defined it and change the size. The whole model gets regenerated using the revised parameters.

A step file contains just the 3D model as it sits - you don't have the option to get back to the parameters that created that model, so there is no timeline.

That part is simple enough to take the step file and simply measure it, re-draw in a sketch with your own parametric dims.
FWIW I can't see this taking more than 15-30 minutes to model this part complete.

@ukracer Have you seen these Fusion tutorials, they are a few years old but the guy is very good at explaining things step by step?

That part is simple enough to take the step file and simply measure it, re-draw in a sketch with your own parametric dims.
FWIW I can't see this taking more than 15-30 minutes to model this part complete.

Unless you don't have a clue what you are doing..........then even trying to find out how to apply a construction plane takes some people days not minutes.

Yes I have watched him when I first started using pi's. Not sure I have watched anything relating to fusion. I will take a look.

well I have spent 2 days cutting an object. but when I combine it says multiple objects.
