Partly depends what you want it to look like. My old bike, I wipe everywhere with waxoyl once every couple years-ish. It genuinely does go a bit mouldy as whatever bugs that can live on the hydrocarbons in the product and colonise it do their thing. No corrosion, but not the look everyone is going to aspire to. Lighter, thinner, more delicate but more invisible coatings will be less resilient.
If you want clean, shiny and preserved, no coatings and a controlled atmosphere is the aspiration.
