The Ducati gas pipe frames of the bevel era were MIGed on what was -- in the 60s -- fairly up to date machinery, but it's probably only up to mid range Clarke standards today. Some of the welds (and the welds on 70s Yamahas -- also MIG) look horrible (Italians can't weld?) but I've only ever seen one break and that was because some fool decided it would be a good idea to run a brake torque arm through a tube at right angles to the direction it was designed to take load. Ultimately, poor engineering will defeat any weld.

Italians can't weld !! Have you seen some of the dross that comes out of Japan, Germany and the USA ??!!

The design of the bevel Ducati frames was superlative and followed the straight line ethic for best possible rigidity for weight, I have one the 'gas pipe' bevels, a 1975 750 Sport and even now it will run rings around most stuff on handling !

Watch out for the men in black Armani suits and shades, they will be the DOC mafia after your blood !!

Afternoon to all.
Quick question regarding safety. Hoping to get some feedback. First, the back story:

I have a 1984 Sportster. Took it off a curb last season (don't ask), and snapped off the bracket that my kickstand spring hooked onto. Borrowed a little buzz box to stick weld another bracket (most likely just a fender washer with one side ground down flat).
And now my query:
Can I weld this replacement bracket to the underside of my bike frame with the gas tank still attached to the bike? Certainly not looking to blue myself up, but not sure if this is a legitimate concern? Will covering is with a dampened towel suffice as a precautionary action?
My mechanical expertise is limited and although I'm sure it's simple enough to remove the tank altogether, I'd like to avoid it if possible. Any suggestions or advice from past experience would be greatly appreciated.

Me-I'd remove the tank, its easy on sporties, I disconnect the battery as well. If you spill fuel, clean up well and move the bike away from where you removed the tank. I'd prefer MIG for that if you can borrow one.
You can probably do it with the tank in place though.
Clean up around the area well.

I have a need to repair the bottom steering bearing race on my honda cx500... the bike fell, the bottom steering stem hit the turn limiter on the frame.. normally, it should have been sheared off but Honda applied a strong weld there and the frame suffered... this is how it looks from the bottom.

It looks to be repairable becuase the bearing races (the top and the bottom one) are just pressed into the steering tube that seems aligns to them during the process of welding - and sure it does.

I plan to make a new bearing race, cut the damaged one out, press the new one snugly, it will have a longer flange that fits into the tube so as not to lose symetry...... then weld and off course control heat.

The question is... what kind of steel should I use? I think weldable mild steel probably... I read the ones are better type construction steels,
