Motorised fishing reel.

My wife only has the use of her left arm and wants to start fishing again.

I have searched for an off the shelf solution but can only find American offerings, that I am not sure will fit the bill.

My idea therefore is to make a motorised version myself.
I would hope to make something 3 D printed in an attempt to make it available to others. But failing that fabricated our of Aluminium would be my fall back.

In simple terms I need to identify a motor and electronics with battery that will cope.
Initial ideas are to replace the handle with a motor connection and have a button to wind when needed.

Unlike my normal way of designing ,where I try to cover every eventuality and this it never gets finished I am sure a good starting point will be just to get the motor to wind in one direction and use the clutch to allow for drag.

Any suggestions greatfully received.

As you say I'd fabricobble something together and get your wife to try it out.

No point in spending all the time designing something to find she can't get on with it.

Maybe prototyping it in some wood or something first then once you've fine tuned it measure it up and print a part?

Perhaps make it powered from 18V so that short term you can use drill batteries etc., to power it.

I presume this is for sea fishing, seem to remember a few years ago seeing a few offerings from I think Daiwa & Shimano, as best I recall they were powered by either a belt pack or the boat D/C. May be worth a call to a big retailer such as the Glasgow Angling Centre, 0141 2128880.

For a trial run it should be easy enough to pull the handle from an existing wheel and cobble up some sort of drive that you can hold in place directly powered by a cordless screwdriver/drill/etc.
If you want to diy it then a normal reel with a 12v 90deg drill might be a good drive option?

What would your wife be fishing for, mackerel from a pier/rocks ? Single hook or trace? I fish for mackerel with a five hook trace and a spinning reel. If you get five on it’s quite a workout getting them in. If I was to make an electric reel, I think I’d go spinning reel with rear drag. You could mount the reel and motor inline on the rod handle.

I am pretty sure that a drill would work.
It's small motors with a decent amount of torque I was hoping members might highlight as its not easy searching for fishing reel motor.

Something along these lines is probably going to be the easiest as shaft is already 90 degrees to the motor....
It's just a matter of attaching it to the rod and reel....
Don't forget most fishing reels the handle can be installed both sides
I would have a thumb button on top or side of the reel mount area so it can't be pressed by accident during cast etc as it would mess things up.....

You can remote mount the battery or even shove a small 12v drill battery in pocket, but this is going to be really heavy and awkward to cast.....

Personally, I wouldn't be "reinventing the wheel", I would imagine that there are plenty of used powered reels that would do the job and can be bought at an affordable price, unless you want a challenge and make one just because you can. By the time you buy all the bits and the hours spent finding those bits, and put them together, it will add up more than the bought reel and probably won't be as good. Just my 2 cents worth.

Good on her for wanting to get back out on the bank. Some cheap reels out there, the second one on Lazarus list can be had for £60 odd pound. If you decide to build one, I think I have an old multiplier reel in the loft you can have. I’ll have a look over the weekend

Not really but I have never seen multiplier being used on a carp lake.
In fact I tried one in the sea and soon reverted as I either had birds nest from over run or a sore thumb if I remember correctly.

I also can't find the link to the second reel in @Lazurus list.

They can be a disaster if your not careful. Used to fish a lot from charter boats, if you let the line sink to fast it would over run and cause a severe birds nest. Great reels once you master them
