I'll phone murex too on Monday as they list a diode bridge (1415014)to see what the price is for a complete replacement.

Might be worth finding out what the price is for the next size up is to make the welder a bit more beefier. Won't make the welder weld any thicker metal but for a few (?) quid more would make it a bit more robust. From what I have seen from others post on here, when they have spoken to Tecarc they have found them very helpful.
Ps give the fan (and the rest of machine) a good clean to allow good air flow.

Yes I think the 12 years of mess and muck build up has to go, thanks for everything will post up results when done. I was thinking the next size up may offer better cooling?

I finally fitted the new diode bridge which I ended up getting from tecarc through ebay, I went for the 230 AMP MIG WELDER BRIDGE RECTIFIER (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111309590846) after asking a few questions, this was easy to fit too, started the machine up and it didn't cut the house electrics, I was well happy, but it now blows the plug fuse, you can pull the trigger a good few times before it blows fuse, so looking at the contactor flashing blue I thought maybe this was causing the fuse to blow? so I brought one too from tecarc fitted it but no better it wasn't blowing the house electrics anymore but now the fuse in the plug, and if I leave the machine running (just on with the fan running no arcing) for a minute or 2 the fuse blows.
I got the unit took to a local welding engineer who my work deals with and got him to have a look, Outcome is the main transformer is no good, gutted I have this welder since new and its served me well and I can't get a new transformer so it seems like its the end of the road for my murex
