Good stuff Zardoz, carbon pipe to plate can be a devil for undercut on pipe, you seem to have kept this to a minimum.

Stainless: can have same result. Weld a tad on large side, pick up your speed of travel (SOT) for a smaller weld profile, nice continuous filler wire dips will see you achieve neat dime configuration.

First ever Alluminium attempts

Did some Ally TIG welding last night for the first time ever, and it shows!

(Yeah i know I didnt clean the ally properly. It was strange to see as the hot zone moved forward the surface oxidization was sort of dancing in front of the HAZ looking sort of like a plasma, and burning away the surface)


First thing i learned was that you have to let the piece cool down in between welds if you are gonna be doing welds close together. Otherwise the extra heat just melts your weld pool into a gradually wider and lower weld.


After i learned that things improved very slightly.



Last is my embaressing attempt at a butt weld



Well thats my C&G level 2 TIG over and done with, Hopefully signing on for level 3 in September, and might do some oxy-ace whilst im waiting.

With a foot pedal it becomes fun to control the runs to look the same even though the material heats up.

yes you are saying exactly what i was thinking last night. At college on the Miller TIG, i have never noticed any need for a foot pedal with the mild or stainless steel we use. But with Alluminium, for the first time i was wishing that i had a foot pedal to control the power as i was going along. Hopefully i will be able to try that next week.

Good luck with that zardoz, I have just passed my level 2 tig ally, now on SS and looking forward to level 3 tig ally next year, it's all a learning curve......life that is.....

Good efforts Zardoz, crawl before walking comes to mind, I have 3mm al/al examples within one of my folders, amp and gaps details can be viewed to give you an idea...........

Lift came to take me to golf range, now where was I..........try setting slope in slope out (if you have this) to help control heat input, very handy too for assisting with running wire through fingers, takes a little practice to get used to, but when your sorted, will make life a lot easier!!
