Thank you Mike, I had not intended to re paint it! The rolling restoration just sort of started the way these things do.

Paint it black mate then carefully scrape over the face with a new stanley blade. It'll look mint.

That was the original plan, you are right and if it does not work out I can always take the spray paint off with thinners, I have no idea what the original paint was but thinners does not even soften it.

Easier said than done, today's attempt was ok but I know I can do better, I'll strip it tomorrow and have another go.

Takes a bit of patience and only draw the stanley blade in the direction it's leaning or it'll dig in, but I've done several threading plates and they usually turn out very well. Perhaps a light sanding with very fine emery to polish the raised bits and reduce any key for the paint before you start.

Towards the end I was getting quite good for most of the larger letters and numbers but some of it has very little relief and I scraped the background in a couple of places, most of it did look good but I think I can do better.

I do similar on engraved name plates and that’s difficult enough when they’re flat.

Thank you Matt, the small text 'driven on stud' etc. is not too good and there are a couple of nicks in the background here and there but I was not going to do it a third time.
