Narrow Boat Welding?

Looks like I could be doing some welding...

Seems like some of the Half round steel going along the side of the boat has come away (I believe they're called rubbing strakes?) & rotting. So looking to be a cut out & weld in some new stuff job!

Yeah thats the stuff!

Potentially I feel I might of opened up a can of worms as the gap behind the convex & the sheet steel it should be welded onto has been filled with filler

We see this so often at work where it seems people have used several hundred weight of body filler around the boat before selling it!
Also a common issue with as we call it the D-bar but aka rubbing strake alot of them are only stitch welded onowhich allows water between the hull and D-bar causing corrosion issues. We repaired one several weeks ago were the rust had built up so much it ripped the D-bar off-the-shelf boat.

I worked on a 55ft steel motor yacht years ago, about 30 years old, It was built by a well known yard on the thames at Teddington. They had literally covered the entire hull above the waterline in polyester pud to get it fair. It was like a colander below the waterline. We called it the twenty gallon boat because we used ten gallons of P40 & Ten gallons of P38 on it. It also had an mfi kitchen in it which had got damp & swelled rather a lot. Some lulu with rose tinted specs bought it.
