Need help finding a wire feed roller

I reversed the polarity on my welder and was pleased with the results. The arc seemed steadier and more natural... before, it was more like I was forcing it, whereas now it's like it's forming on its own. So I was moderately pleased...



...and THEN I realized that I was still using the 0.6 mm wire that I couldn't weld at all earlier in the week! The wire speed was about the same as I used before the polarity change, so it looks like almost all the improvement is due to the polarity. Wow! I never thought it would make such a big difference!

I did the same on my Clarke. Having bever used a MIG, I put in the sample roll of gasless, did a few beads and said "This is a mess." Ran right out and got a bottle of gas. Wasted a weekend swearing "this is just not right, I'll never get good at this!" Then realized I had not reversed polarity.

Swapped wires and laid a perfect bead: "$hit, this is too easy"

Did everything with 0.8mm wire. Now have been playing with 0.6 and it is nice on thin metal but it does seem to have a narrow wire speed range.

Good to hear it is sorted out. Sounds like you have a decent unit there. Since it had a real Tweco torch, I it did not seem like it was built so cheap that it could not weld well.

Thanks to you and everyone else on the forum for all the help and suggestions with this issue. The manual does say something about the welder being optimized for 0.8 mm wire, so I'm going to go back to the 0.8 mm for my "normal" stuff (which at this point is 90% practice) and save the 0.6 for thin work.

Sounds like all of you have recently started doing welding. I've been doing it for 23 years after Army welding and machinist schools. Not to insult anyone's intelligence, but the 85 amp welders I stay away from because of low amperage. From many years of experience, you don't use anything below 100amp because they don't have the necessary amperage for the thicker stuff. I can do everything ya'll are trying to do and plus with a Lincoln 100 amp at work and a Clarke 180 at home, plus aluminum and stainless steel welding at work with a Lincoln 250 Amp spool gun. your .023-.024 can be used to weld up 1/4 inch if you have the proper amperage. Wire speed should be smooth at the right feed rate. Always go .005 above the wire size for the tip. The videos don't do justice to explain the difference in welding between ac and dc. Most the smaller stick and wire feeders run ac not dc. DC works much better and you can do aluminum, just not very well on 110v. All drive rollers have two sides for the wire size and different rollers for the different metals. The spatter you speak of has a lot to do with ac welding. DC doesn't cause all that and runs smoother. Main things; watch amerage, feed rate and angle(45 deg) you use to weld, push the weld for penetration don't pull it. Most welding is done between 90 and 110 amps. I have taught someone the basics in 5 - 10 minutes and they've done fine. You get more from an experience welder in 5 minutes than you will from those videos speaking from experience.

Which videos are you referring to? Certainly agree one to one tuition is the best kind. Though I like to think the pictures and forum here are more helpful than nothing (which used to be the alternative). Though anyone who comes to me for tuition gets pointed to the website via the computer in the garage and then to the welder - it's good feedback for me.

Good welder makes the most difference. In the UK it is rare to find an AC MIG welder these days. Are they common in Canada? That's madness - as I say you should go metric - that's maybe the difference.

I'm sorry Larry but your post is most confusing old chap
It looks like you're describing stick, then mig, then stick, then mig, then stick?
The spatter was caused by Clevinski having the polarity set for flux-cored wire, changing the polarity sorted that.
Also, I'm not doubting your 23 years experience but it's PULL for deeper penetration, not push . Push gives a much better weld apperance though.

Sorry about some confusion some saw. It wasn't intended. Secondly, had I taken time to notice I was looking at a board in the UK I wouldn't have bothered speaking up since all of you in that part of the world operate on 220 50 hertz and do things differently, while we in the US of A operate on 110 and 220 60 hertz. This difference in current, particulary hertz, has an effect on many things. Thirdly, the ac and dc comments were regarding which current shows best results when welding. Stick, MIG or TIG were not part of that reference. With reference to pushing and pulling, I have taught both and including the instructors and employers I have had and worked for, we prefer pushing the weld along because it heats the base metal ahead of the filler metal in MIG. We do push and pull in stick, welder's preference for either of course, and pushing the weld with TIG. I hopefully have alleviated any confusion, sorry I got into a UK thing and I bid you good people of the UK a good day and good-bye.

Hey, no need to disappear Larry, we have members from all round the world on here including several from the states. The site may be UK based but it's by far not solely aimed at UK members.
I agree with you about pushing being nicer, it really does give a better looking weld with a lot less spatter but with a tad less penetration than pulling. I ran some test beads a little while back and although there wasn't a great deal of difference it was definitely noticeable. We had a long debate about it a while back.

hi,you don't need model numbers all makes to find feed drive rollers all you need
is the the size of the roller example out size diameter 30mmx inside dia 22mm and 10 mm wide. and that's how you find the roller you need plus the size of wire .9 on one side 1.2 on the another side of roller..good hunting..
