Regarding protecting the bench I suspect once it's in use and as long as water is not left pooled on it you won't have too much trouble with rusting unless it's a humid environment.
One possibility might be to blue the worktop? It's the stuff that's used on shotgun and rifle barrels. That's normally applied hot but you can get cold bluing.
I think This Old Tony did a decent example when he machined some tool holders in one of his videos.

blue wouldnt be much use , it would get scratched to hell , certainly not a rust proof solution as you need to keep barrels oiled , sorry dont mean to .... on your idea, but dont think thats a practical solution really although if you didnt actually use the bench it would look nice .

Maybe bluing isn't the correct term but whatever they do to tool steel - certainly you can scratch it but it's pretty durable as the solution I'm thinking of actually saturates the metal.
With regards to oiling of barrels - it depends a lot on the quality of the bluing, oiling the barrels is mainly for the inside of the barrel because that does take a beating. I had my competition clay gun re-blued from the factory and it's been a lot more durable. I very very rarely oil the outside of that, sometimes only if it's got wet and is going to be sat for a while in the cabinet.

my brushless version has no soft start and is lovely to use I don’t like soft start meself

So I have been planning this bench for a little while. I ordered 2.5mm sheet and three lengths of 30mm box.
I didn’t want anything to extreme for the time being, when I do my garage I’ll built something more substantial. For specifically welding.
Anyway, so this was such an awkward job. I should’ve done this before moving everything in. I had no room and trying to make something so big square in such a small space was super hard.
As you can all see, I made it so I could level it and take it anywhere I’d like. I made a shelf underneath on the right and will be enclosing the compressor when I get some more wood.
I had the top sheered and folded for £30 at my local fabricators which was a nice touch for the final result. I also gave it a quick once over with some stone chip paint on the whole underside.
I’m going to buy a scotch pad disk and clean the top. Any idea what I can use to stop the top rusting?

Nice work, looks similar to one I inherited from the in-laws, galv sheet over a 2" angle frame. Is the plywood in the second pic still in place under the steel sheet? Mine has nothing underneath the top apart from a brace half way and won't take much abuse as a result.
I have a similar project coming up, you can never have too much bench space. Only mine will need adjustable feet as the floor is all wonky.

No the ply was just to move it off the floor. It is just the frame with 2.5mm folded sheet welded all the way round.
I have a adjustable feet on mine. M8 bolts welded and 30mm feet that I ordered off like

I think having the compressor tucked away in there makes it too inaccessible should you ever need to replace parts, or even the whole unit - but hopefully experience in use will prove me wrong.

I have one brushless 18v Makita but it has soft start.
Not really needed on a 125 mm grinder but doesn't bother me neither.
The two other features I like is that there a brake, meaning you can put it down almost instantly.
Second is that it has variable speed which is useful when using surface conditioning pads.
And, thinking of your other thread, it makes wire brushes shoot a lot less wires. Brushed about 200 pieces this week and haven't felt a single wire hitting me so far.
Nice job with the bench, capping ends and mitering is just overkill when covering it anyway.
To prevent rust there's many ways but you can use old school car hard wax (the stuff you apply with a wet rag) It can hold rust off for weeks even outside.
If you can get some phosphoric acid, apply and let it sit a couple of hours then wash off with water, then neutralise with soda. Will take all rust away but also leave a protective layer of phosphate.

just wipe it over with oil gt80 or such and leave to dry and repeat every few weeks

I have a miroku, unlike beretta etc ,they will rust/pit if not looked after ,thats just how it is wouldnt part with it though ,32" 3800, teagued adjustable stock, nice clay buster.

Just use it. Your gonna be brightening it up frequently every time you linish off the spatter.
I assume this is gonna be a welding bench Kim? You don’t wanna be covering it in oils and coatings you want to be getting a nice circuit through it with the work return.
