A Joiner kicked his hammer down the Upcast shaft on Stillingfleet mine. Took them 2 days to inspect the shaft and find all the bits. 820m to the bottom.
Site foreman made him wear/use a lanyard all the time after that.

I'd rather the harness than the life jacket. Unless there's a boat in the water to rescue you.I would say he has a life jacket on, it is visible around his neck and the straps down his back and around his waist . More visible in the second picture.
But fully agree about fall arrest kit.
Maybe Portugal has differing rules on H&S.
we could ask @Parm but all he does nowadays is eat cake and drink champers.

Funny, I never see the guys mooring vessels wearing harnesses.
There is never a safety boat available either as there is always this big ship in the way.
Hopefully they can shut down the props before they become bite sized chunks for the fishes, because that's the immediate risk.
I also haven't heard of many incidents in over 25 years working around ports and harbours.
Being tied on to something, especially with fast moving water, is often the last thing you want and there have been fatalities where the person was using a harness over water.
Do the risk assessment but don't prejudge the outcome.

I've had a few offers from other places killroot was one £25 an hour 6 weeks, but I'd only started where I'm at now and so far I like it, plus he paid for an ap refresher course, the shipyard is apparently upping the wages for these new contracts coming in, for now I'm staying clear of local factory work, I was offered 11-13 a few weeks ago depending on experience, which means you start on 11 and probably in 2 years time go to 13
yep ,,, thats the way of it ,, where you are looks grand ,, and it will be a nice summer with luck. With min wage at 10.50 you dont get a lot of tig for 11 quid . Basically the same wages for stacking shelves as stacking dimes.

jesus we were thinking of moving to N.I in a few years time as my mrs is from antrim not to sure now lol, kfc and starbucks were offering around £13+ to complete deadheads over here.
what are skilled people getting self employed, average here is £25-35
nurses get that here ,, if in doubt log on to job finder and put belfast in as your chosen location .
welders seldom get 14 an hour here , class 1 drivers might see 12.50 , class 2 multidrop about 11 an hour and thats about the worst job in the world. shelf stackers 10.50 , minimum wage in uk is standard wage here ,,, motot trade and plant maintenance do a bit better ,,, but still its sub 15.
house prices are low but not as low as they were and the cost of livings increasing rapidly . but you could say that about most places ,,, down side is it rains a lot , up side is that in the summer the rain gets warmer.
