New project. A cheap VW Caddy…..(do they exist?????)

Right, after getting the Golf where I wanted it, it wasn’t really floating my boat as it’s not different enough. So, I started looking through the classifieds for a cheap Caddy or even a part Ex for the Golf, which quickly pointed to the fact that there’s no such thing as a cheap Caddy!

That was until I happened across an add for one advertised as spares or repair at the princely sum of a grand! Advertised as loads spent but spares or repair. Now, to me, it’s either loads spent, or spares or repair, you can’t have both!
So I organised a viewing and was informed that there were engine codes that wouldn’t clear and the van goes into limp mode.
He’d spent a few hundred on crank sensor, injector loom, and there were still faults that wouldn’t clear. It looked straight with a few knocks here and there but was certainly no builders van. It did however look like it had been involved in a ram raiding session in a Lexus dealership in downtown Japan!

Looks like it was thrown sideways through Halfords clearance bin! My first port of call would be get someone with VCDS to scan and see what's wrong. Could be something very simple

I agreed to purchase at the asking price which pleased the seller no end, (c’mon it’s worth a bag of sand all day long!) and went home to peruse the web and YouTube. The last option yielded some fruit in the form of a few vids of Ecu faults caused by chaffing of the thin control wires in the loom.
So I rang the seller and asked would he mind me visiting prior to organising its collection to see if I could source the problem. He was off work the following day so agreed.
Next morning I picked up my old man for the ride along as he was doing my mothers head in and he wanted to pick up his weekly alcohol intake from Lidl’s which would save me two journeys!
I shoved a load of gear in the golf , like gas soldering iron, wire, multimeter, shrink tube, insulting tape ( ) and self amalgamating tape and a couple of screw drivers and socket sets.
I checked the cam sensor plug after unplugging it a confirmed loss of 5v on the feed! Airbox out, plastic trunking conduit stuff pulled off behind the rad and found the culprit. Four wires with witness marks from being worn away by the corrugations in the conduit and I managed to pull apart 4 of them! A quick repair and an insulation job, cleared the faults and hey presto, no faults return and a running van.
The PO joked, you’ll be driving it home at this rate! To which my dad piped up “I can drive your Golf if you want”! 20 mins later after ringing my ins co. we were heading for home, not 2 hours after we’d arrived! Result!
Within a couple of hours of getting it home, I had stolen the alloys off the Golf, removed half a ton of Stainless tat and given it a good clean.

What is that about!!

I’ve since joined the Caddy forum and I’m hooked! I think this might get expensive!
Alubutyl sound deadening, carpet, spray glue etc ordered, I also found a Touran being broken up in Aberdare, so last Sunday afternoon me a Mrs Exuptoy went on a jolly with the Caddy full of hand tools inc a few battery grinders and drills and proceeded to rip out the front 5 seats and unpicked the spot welds at the mounts and for the princely sum of £200 came home with a full van inc carpets, door cards and a Jack and wheel brace which were missing from the caddy!
I think I’m gonna be busy once I get home from offshore!

My first Caddy was a MK1 D, with a 4 speed box ......still miss it....

Caddy 2k are a cracking van.
They are great, especially as everything from touran swaps over.

The only thing which is labour intensive is swapping the dash board. (Touran has a glovebox where caddy has the shelf)

So much nicer once the carpet is in rather than the rubber mats.

Looks like you got a decent starting point. Is it tdi or sdi?

Then again I don't get the general VW attraction either, I drove a brand new (at the time) mk5 Golf Gti, undeniably fast but so incredibly bland and just meh. Like driving a fast sponge

Guy from Donegal came and bought my sons VW Up. He was 20 and driving a nice passat. Was telling me as soon as he turns 21 and can insure a van he was going to change the passat for a caddy. Personally I'd have stuck with the passat but he thought the van would have more street cred.

Jammy get. I'd love a Caddy specially at that price... Instead I have another zombie Transit might arrive this week, which might be an easy fix like this, but also might be a complete waste of time..

My partner and I wanted a small van for camping and putting stuff in. Considered everything from nissan nv200 to lwb Peugeot partner varients and everything in between.

The VW caddys were more expensive than everything else but everything else was like driving a slow, noisy tobacco tin. At least the caddys has some semblance of decent fit, finish etc. The lwb partners appear to have the lwb "bit" just glued onto the back.

Always fancied the pickup version but they are like hens teeth.

Skoda released the same van & pickup with a Skoda badge on at one point. They are quite a bit cheaper than the VW secondhand when they do come up

Er, not my opinion of my 2010 Transporter. Just shy of 200,000 miles, bought it at 89,000 6 years ago. Virtually no problems other than egr/dpf at 160,000.

I love it and would have another.

Oh, and I had a Passat estate before that that I did 175,000 miles in over 12 years too, which again, was a great car.

Brand new 2016, spent more time with VW than me. Eventually swapped after 9 months and much, much arguing

Never have another by choice, current one is company supplied, it does its job but is nothing special. Will be replaced early next year and thankfully my position in the company means I get to choose what I have next

dont forget the caddys wonky wing mirrors
once ide seen those they couldnt be unseen!!!
thankfully the tourans can be swapped over onto a caddy so they match

No complaints here either had Passat, Golf, Up, Tiguan and Polo in the family in the last 18 years. All been very reliable.
