New to air compressors

Hi.

I have just brought a Clarke boxer 3hp 150ĺ belt drive compressor from machine mart. I told them I wanted it for general car mechanics and spray painting which they advised me would be the best one to go for. Along with this I got told I would need a regulator

I have set it up like the shop said. Tank - Regulator - Drain - Hose - Tool. Connected it all up turned compressor on and it switched off at 150psi turned the tank valve to open, pressed trigger and nothing tries increasing the pressure via the regulator and nothing.

Does the pressure increase on the regulator gauge when you turn the knob

No the regulator gauge does not move when you turn it. Just stays at zero and doesn't even flicker.

As I doubt that the compressor was delivered (or collected) by yourself with the reg and gauge attached on the end, then you have fitted it yourself. I believe you have fitted the gauge to the wrong port AND the IN and OUT are the wrong way round (look on under side of reg and it should say IN and OUT !
It may also say Gauge on one of the connections.

BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE REG YOU MUST RELEASE THE 150 PSI IN THE TANK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TO DO THIS PULL THE RING BY THE TANK GAUGE. THIS WILL FORCE THE OVER PRESSURE VALVE TO OPERATE ALLOWING YOU TO DRAIN THE AIR

Check where you plug your airline into the tank, the regulator there may be closed

there is a pressure regulator knob on the compressor tank as well as on the inline drain filter

I had to screw a lever valve to the compressor to begin with which came with the compressor itself. At that point I switched the compressor on and when the gauge on the tank reached 150psi it shut off. I slightly pulled the lever down and air came rushing out which is to be expected so shut it off and then connected the regulator. Again I pulled the lever down to allow air through to the regulator. After opening the valve all the way no air was coming out the other side of the regulator. Under the regulator there is an arrow under the input side with direction of flow to which I followed. I did haven't assemble it all as in connectors and gauge. I'm sure all is fitted correctly. As you can see from the video I try adjusting the regulator and it releases air as you try to increase or decrease the pressure but surly the gauge should be moving and a constant flow of air being released. I didn't need to release the pressure in the tank to remove regulator as said I have a stop valve fitted straight to the tank.

Badger1bear. I don't think there is a regulator on the tank itself as the air comes straight out the side of the compressor to a stop lever valve.

All I can put it down to is a defective regulator.

Could be you have some ptfe tape has gotten into the reg.
The reg control works opposite to a water tap in your kitchen as in you turn it clock wise to let air out and anti clockwise to stop. Sometimes the black cap of regulator must be pulled up (will click) aprox 6 to 8 mm to allow it to then operate as a control.

The reg is making strange clicking noises when he turns it as though the threads have gone, turns slightly then hiss then click and nothing

Do you have to press the knob down (or pull it up) on the reg to adjust it, like a medicine bottle cap? As said clockwise to increase pressure.

Did you by any chance try to turn the regulator to adjust the pressure without lifting the cap to release the lock?
The regulator looks damaged that's all.

The regulator is an inline one, normally they have check valves on the output side where you connect the hose for regulators connected to the compressor, then you would see tank pressure at the gauge.

Without anything attached to the output end of the regulator can you just wind the knob down for air to freely flow out? From your video it does seem to do this but you only seem to let a little bit out but from what I can make out it does look to be working. With nothing attached to the end the gauge doesn’t see pressure so won’t move but when you attached the line and tool and wind the knob down you should be able to pressurise the line and then the gauge should show pressure, is this the case. When hooked up with an airline and tool you should be able to wind down the knob to increase the pressure, does this happen?

Just had another look at the vid, the regulator is knackered. The knob isn't lifting the valve seat for whatever reason.

Thanks for your reply guys. Yes you do have to lift the regulator to adjust and no I didn't try turning it while I'm the down position. At first I did connect it all up with the air hose and a spray gun attached as I assumed it would just all work. At that point I tried adjusting the pressure and still nothing not even a flicker on the gauge. So then I traced steps back to find out where it was stopping and it was at the regulator point. I have spoke to machine mart where I purchased it and they said it sounds like a duff reg so just off there now. Will keep you posted and thanks all.

The regulator can't show pressure until you connect something to it. You are just letting the air out of the tank till something is there to run. The top of the reg presses down and turns to increase pressure on the ones I have. Screw one of these or something similar into it.
