New toy - thermic lance

So there is a difference between a thermal and a thermic lance, I'd always thought they were different names for the same thing.

You could be right.

I naively thought you used a thermal lance for exothermic cutting.

Thermic Reaction is an exothermic chemical reaction between Iron and Aluminium.........used to weld Railway Tracks

If you put a few Aluminium Wires alongside the Steel wires inside the steel tube the thermic lance initiates easier without the oxygen

Ive never heard one called a Thermal Lance.......but some might

Out of curiosity I checked out the ones we used, they were made by divex and come as an orange "jacket" with batteries and oxygen cylinder inside, with a rod holder that looked a bit like a large arc welding "stinger".

I call all vacuum cleaners Hoovers, the use of generic names for differing things is pretty normal.


I thought I had a thermic lance, but I have a sort of air-arc cutter which uses o2 instead of compressed air!

I worked in a foundry in the 70s and we used a thermic lance to cut a skull out of a furnace that broke down mid melt. At the time I was working on an arcair that ran at 1200 amps and burnt 1" copper coated carbon rods and the holder supplied 100psi of air to blow the slag away to clean heads on castings after removing with oxy propane. What I remember most is the noise and the amount of smoke the thermic lance generated.

I take it the arcair slice is a Broco-type device with a tubular rod in a holder? You can use one of those with one hand and hold it like a welding torch/electro holder. Quite impressive on a small scale, great for underwater work.

What's normally referred to as a thermic lance is a loud noisy dirty hot fire-breathing beast of a tool that will melt through steel and concrete. You need a oxy cutting torch just to get it going. You need a full protection suit, exclusion zone, fire precautions and a way to get rid of the large clouds of noxious orange and brown smoke produced. It's like comparing a cigarette lighter to a roofer's felting torch.

Have Googled "broco cutter". Yes you are exactly correct!

But the Arcair only needs a 12v battery and a bottle of oxygen to get it going.

And yes you can turn off the Arcair. Not sure if you can restart the rod, we have not got that far yet?

What is the difference between an Exo thermic cutter and a Themic lance?

Are both not tubes with iron powder in them you ignite and increase the temp with oxygen.

a normal cutting torch when in use has an exothermic reaction !

Would quite like to have a go with a thermic lance. Have heard some stories from the local furness engineers about using them on' job.
