Nice outboard engine stand max of 300hp

This 19 was my last boat in a long line of phantoms and Ring 21's, I had given up on Mercurys at that point after a previous expensive experience with 260hp Bridgeport /CLE/ offshore leg and put a bog standard Yamaha 225hp on the back.

6 years with that Yam and it never missed a beat. Had all sorts of props on it, the good old Yamaha Drag, Laser 2's, in the end the best of the lot was a rebushed OMC (the shame of it!) Raker 26". I think I used to run it with the cav plate 3 - 4" above

I got bored of boats and swapped it for a Land Rover Defender about 8 years ago!i had to raid facebook to find the only photo I have of it!

Nice boat. getting plenty of air under her there ha ha , running like that definitely keep the algae away.

Now the RAKER that's the prop I am after next, I want a 20 pitch with 13 spline for my little 60 rude, older v4 gearbox had same splines and upto 90 e-tecs.
ive been told the Original Rakers are better than the newer ones being made by solas (cheap metal and weak )
I do like the look of the Raker, yet to actually have one in my hands to scrutineer .

was it really as good as many people say it is ?

I had one of these, a marina with a selva 80 on the back it was about 13ft long and as soon as you throttled it was out of the water and planning but it was only supposed to have a 50 hp max so it went well with an extra 30 it would do around 70mph on flat water

Pie-in-the-sky question for those more knowledgeable types out there, could you use the motor from an outboard in a kit car? Bike-engined cars have seen a massive growth in popularity over the last few years and there are custom-built V8's using two bike cylinder block & heads on a bespoke crankcase, but these seem like they'd be ideal, so I can only assume there's a very good reason why they aren't?

I suppose you could but it would take some engineering the engines are designed to run vertically so you either have to have a vertical shaft into a gear box or alter the carb mountings not sure if the injection engines would be ok to run horizontal, also there are no engine mountings like a bike or car the eninge simply bolts to the casing then you would need to sort a water pump out as outboards have the water pump on the input shaft of the gearbox
I doubt its impossible but not worth the hassle when there are easier options

The Yamaha f115 outboard is based on the all alloy 1.7l ford zetec E, or rather Yamaha designed the zetec E engine for Ford and used it as the basis of their outboard. At first glance they look the same although only the camshaft and valve components are interchangeable between the two engines.

I think there are a few engines going that way now like Honda it seems they could be favouring the 4 strokes

ok now let me tell you what it realy done, because selva 80 with the biggest prop would never in a million years do 70mph.. fact
The marina 14ft speedboats were not bad little boats, lightweight and nippy little boats. yes that boat in pic is a marina 14, they never made a 13ft.
this hull was also used on cabin version of marina boats !!!!
Not the fastest hull in the world, but not bad especially for the price. these were the cheapest speedboats around due to being very basic.
basic can often be very good when using boats in salt water (less to go wrong and corrode).
Now at 60mph that boat would chine walk and flip violently to the right and over turn, its called blow out.
and the selva 80 was not a race engine !!!
If you had raised the outboard and have a nosecone, low water pick up and a suface piercing stainless race prop you might of eventually hit 60 had it not
over turned the boat and disintegrated killing its occupant.
This hull was first developed in 1972 and used for many other makes of boat too.
with the selva 80 that boat was a genuine 50 to 55mph boat, but very dangerous at that speed and only on water with about 6 inches of chop to keep it stable.
dead calm water with a v bottom fast boat is not a condition for max speed.


Now let me just show you something that might surprise you big time , its water speed record held by the chap I got my semi cleaver prop from.
this prop was used to break the national speed limit for a evinrude e-tec 90hp in 2009. a much more powerfull engine than a selva 80.
Boat was allowed jack plate and race prop, no engine modifications and no nitrous oxide, the boat was a phantom 16 lightweight deep v race boat.
Please note the speed is not 70mph, but 49.56mph with a race prepped propeller. today its a tad over 50mph.
if your only used to a selva 80 on the back of a marina, you would sh*t yourself in a 70mph speedboat.

Well said Phil, that phantom 19 with the 225hp would only do around 70mph.

The 26" Raker was old when I got it, came from propeller revolutions in poole(?) they found it for me after recommending one and did some work on it. All I can say is the boat went a lot better than with any other prop I tried. I think I had a 27" laser 2 which was awful, the boat used to plough the nose with that prop. I lent the phantom to a friend once and the Raker came back bent!

On the subject of props I have had this kicking around for years, I think it came with a Ring 15 once. It looks to have been a 20" but has been worked and restamped as 18". Is also had the blades cut down at the rear where they join the hub, and the cavitation ring cut off, by someone who knew what they were doing from the look of it. I did wonder about trying it on my Humber 5.3 rib with yam 90 (running omc 17 stainless) but the hub needs rebushing so reluctant to spend £70 to find out it is a dog!

I know what 70mph is in a boat, bloody fast aint the word.
its because on water the speed is so different, a friend of mine once thought a boat of mine done 50mph, then I showed him we
were infact doing 33mph flat out.

I had a broom scorpio with a merc 650xs on tha back that set a womens barefoot water ski record back in the 1980's at 42mph.
people cannot believe this is true. here is the boat.

that's the trouble with a bush in a prop your not sure of, so expensive to re-bush.
have ever re-bushed one yourself ?
I have seen it done and looks easy, but only needs to be 1 thou out and all hell could break lose and kill someone.

is there no way you could make it a solid hub just to give it a try out ?
Looks like its originally been a merc prop. I take it that already has vent holes in it too.
I have heard a few people say the laser is a stern lifter, good prop for the heavy back end boat that has a light front.

wish it was like the states over here for props, they have such a huge amount of range and cheap secondhand and so
many good prop shops that will custom a prop for you.
over here we have a very limited amount of prop shops and very very limited race prop prop shops.
and can you imagine going to a big lake and having all day getting different props to test so you get the right one !!!!!

Hey Phill d ive given up boats couple years ago after 30 years in the game and sold off tonns of stuff...the only items i have left are a lifting eye/stator removel tool for the V6 mercs and a genuine Mercury factory workshop book that coveres the XR2 and older V6,s....iff you cover postage then you can have them as thats the type of guy i am

i had a dateline bikini with an 80 hp motor on .there was a curve in the hull underneath and it made it unstable no matter how u trimmed it so i sold it i saw it advertised a month later with a johnson 125hp motor on it it said in addy quick sale owner going abroad i rang em up and said are u still alive after going in it lol it nearly killed us and chucked us out with the 80hp on it was that unstable

Dateline bikini were very nice looking boats, proper 1970's little bling boats, and nice boats on lakes and rivers, but on the sea they are total crap, all of them.
For some reason as soon as it saw a bit of chop it was all over the place, made you think the steering had broke, worst boat ive used on sea.
in the states the very same boats are called sidewinder boats, there was a big dispute over patents, as both the usa sidewinder and uk dateline claim it
was their moulds used for the others. !!!! who made it first i don't know, but they are terrible. even the yanks say the same about the sidewinder = crap at sea.
now the dateline bounty was almost the same but a much better handling boat and all those who owned the bounty loved them.
Today in the USA they make a 15ft boat called a BAJA its a datline/sidewinder 15ft but instead of screen its all fibreglass.
they have altered the underneath somehow and they go fantastic, there is a few on you tube going pretty good.

i had a inline 4 mariner 80, very good engine and made my little Shetland 498 go very well.

im getting forgetfull in old age it was a twin 60 hp mariner engine. it was fitted with a 3ltr ford engine with jet drive but i took it out and sold it
