There was a memo with some vehicles I seem to remember that they weren’t allowed to be reversed at high speed as that led to premature engine failure.
A fleet chap told me it was the oil pump but I’m not sure I remember right.
No idea which were affected but the memo said all I think.

If you ever visit a Police HQ and get round the back... well the amount of cars The Plod (allegedly highly-trained pursuit drivers) smash up at Taxpayers expense.... well let's just say its a LOT.
Given that from what I've seen/witnessed (plus I know a pursuit trained and licensed plod driver, and at best he's "adequate" and certainly not good or above average), then I'd imagine the same drivers smashing them to bits are unnecessarily hard on the mechanicals as well.
All that said - I can't say I'd trust any current car to be robust and reliable for hard use. Vauxhall Senator 3-Litre's were so solid even the ham-fisted and booted Police Drivers struggled to kill them (great car) - but the modern flimsy, techy-gadget trinkets the Mfrs flog now? No chance.

The one and only time I fell foul of the law I was returned to my parents in the back of a Morris Minor patrol car, oh the shame of it…
if they can get in to drill it ,, i could get in to weld it ,,,,
had an 850r estate ,,, what a car , what an engine note,,, its on the never should have sold it list ,,, the c30 t5 was a let down after it.

They had a similar problem when the Range Rover was launched, plod loved it due to all the stuff it could do and carry, but reversing long distances down the hard shoulder etc. caused gearbox failure so Land Rover fitted an oil pump in the gearbox to cure the problem. Roger Crathorne (Mr Land Rover) told us the test drivers ended up with bad necks after having to drive the modified car round the test track at high rpm's in reverse for mile after mile to prove the new oil pump worked.

When the ACPO warned all Forces that the Honda ST1300 was an accident waiting to happen most if not all of them decommissioned the bikes and sold them off. Some were bought (and resold) by Force Motorcycles down in Derbyshire; a lot went to auction but some forces decided that if they couldn't ride them, nobody else could either, so they took an angle grinder to the frame and cut a large V-shaped piece out in order to render them unable to be returned to the road.
The MOD, RAC and AA have never had an issue with the ST13, allegedly

They are complete animals.
I could write a massive post about all the different ways I’ve known them destroy cars. Mis fuelling is a big one.
That said RM is the only organisation I know of that runs a handbrake course! So maybe plod aren’t all that bad.
Force I worked for had the first / only genuine ford body jig outside dealers for many years. Might still be.

I was told that the beemer engine suffered from oil starvation due to the specific way the police use the vehicles for pursuit purposes. They sit ticking over for long periods at the side of the motorway then when they get a "shout" it's foot to the floor in pursuit. The engine was suffering under that transition apparently. The average driver doesn't use them like this, so are less likely to have the issue, but it still sounds like poor design by BMW as the way the cars are used hasn't changed, but the cars clearly have. The Lancs police had to make the decision to diversify their fleet incase there was a mass of recalls on the BMWs meaning they would be left without any cars.
