No spark with my inverter welder 160A

Hi again forum members - I had a few minutes this evening to just play around with my welder again. I took a bit of scrap metal though admittedly it was a bit on the rust side and I didn't really feel like cleaning it. I did get a spark although that's all it seemed to be, the rod just seemed to burn off and left burn marks on the metal.
Is this because the metal wasn't totally clean or the current going through the metal was haphazard or something else?
I'm wondering why you wrote that you didn't feel like cleaning the metal. Is it because you knew you should really have cleaned off the rust? I hope your thread isn't a wind up. My best advice would be to find someone who understands basic principles of electricity (conductivity, etc) and knows enough about arc welding to be able to check out your welder and show you what to do, to get you started.
