Bead or abrasive grit peens into the surfaces, and, once they warm up, out comes the abrasive...tell me the difference of bead blasting engine parts or cleaning the crap from one and having the engine re machined both need scrupulously cleaning afterwards
Oil tanks are an absolute killer for engines if blast cleaned, but....
However.... if they are cleaned out assiduously with much solvent, and subsequently swilled about inside with red oxide primer, any grit residue will likely be held by the paint.
A known method on high class iron engine castings.....
