notching pipes

Mark Evans on A 4x4 is Born used a version of a belt sander to notch a tube when making a roll cage. Can't find the clip but it took seconds.

Think of a belt sander with a drum the same diameter as the pipe.

Drum sanders for notching are big bucks. and some what expensive to run, as you need a roller for each tube size and they eat abrasive.

I mate has one, very fast once setup, but you need to cut the tube to length clamp it etc etc. Much prefer a hole saw notcher

Stil stoopid money as I said just bought a TH76-H from Baileigh for 175quid.

Does the shaft on that one run in bearings Shox Dr?


I use one similar to the one Langy sells but have fitted needle roller bearings for the shaft to run on.

I cut 80 notches with it the other day in about an hour including marking out the tubes changing angles and hole saw size etc
That would have been a nightmare with a bandsaw or grinder.

I also use constant pitch holesaws.

Yes is does, not used it yet. Got an Enfield Bighead Bullet arriving this aft to mod the tank, so won't get to use it until after that. But they look like the affair I had in the last one I built and they lasted fine

I use and sell this one below, Its invaluable when making roll cages & tube chassis's, Had mine for about 15 years and its still cuts perfect, They are £100

Why anyone that notches a lot would cut and file is beyond me as it takes around 30-45 seconds to notch any angle with this.
I use my cordless drill on mine.

Smoother cut, the vari pitch tend to snatch

I don't think there is a cut it will not do, up to 3"

Yup. Baileigh are by far the cheapest as well. I've seen them sold under different names for as much as 350quid

a lot will depend on the type of work you going if it's just right angles notches then there is nothing as quick as the lever type one
the hole saw type will be slow going through pipe but more versatile for angles

any idea how long the blade in one of those lowbuck pipe notchers will last
