I find it to be a very strong engine, we had another one thstvrsn for 3 years on a bent valve still ran great.

Also got a bit done on the engine, started stripping it down. I've had the fly wheel reground due to the clutch having a slight bit of wear haha. I've also has the crank polished.
If anyones interested the spec of the engine is as follows
Flywheel and crank lightened and balanced.
Pistons machined for valve clearance
Big valve head
Ported and polished and matching inlet to twin 40s
Heavy duty valve springs
Highlift cam and solid lifters.
Mated with a paddle clutch and sscc gearbox with a 4.6 diff.

So bit more done on the nova, too gearbox apart, part out of interest and partly because I wanted to check make sure no issues, luckily doesn't look too bad little bit of wear but yo be expected from the abuse it gets
I've also started to have a play in the engine bay installing a few more bits and just general tidying, I also collected some new to me comomotive th wheels and tyres to go on it as another set. Which I think look great on it so far
I havent done much more on the writing as the lad helping me has broken his ankle so progress has slowed on that front as I'm not the best but can get by slowly. Also had play making the dash how I want it.
Then finally got clutch back from replating and got it back on engine so b9x is ready to go on then I will be ready when my cam comes next week and hopefully engine in then.

Thought I'd update this as at the weekend it was 12months since I did my first rally and well bit changed here's a few photos of the car finished last year fell off on here as I forgot to be honest
However since then last winter I decided we needed more power so put a fully built x14xe and have now got that in and working and have upped power by about 60hp. Will update eith more photos when I get chance

I remember seeing these back in the day, mostly with Dave Metcalfe (RIP) at the helm. Almost as mad as Colin McRae, only knew one speed. Flat Out. Quite often beat some of the 2000cc cars in his 1600 Nova.

Mate, long deceased, was the sales manager of the local Vauxhall main agent and qualified for a Cresta sized car. However he oped for a Brabham HA Viva insteadWhen I was changing my car [a few back], the garage had an Astra GTE and a red XR3i in the showroom.
I was having difficulty deciding and the sales manager suggesting taking them out for a test drive, route to be my choice.
Off I set, in the Ford first round a mix of twisty back roads and main road on the return leg. Then I took the GTE out round the same course - on the main road section back I looked down and the digital dash was reading in three figures.
Decision made, GTE 1 : XR3i 0Turned out it had been the Sales Manager's Company car, which had been factory fitted with the Irmscher quad-headlight conversion.
