What type roll Or angle bender is that ?

I wanted to ask you about your angle bender , I am a professional welder of 20 plus years, & own a welding Job shop also. I have gotten to the point I like to build my own tools when i can . But, I have always wondered how those angle benders were driven. Weather the top wheel was free spinning, or was it driven also . I was looking to buy one from Kempler Machinery used but, they want $8500. for a ancient buffalo Angle Roller . So I had decided to build one that I can run off my HYD Mubea Iron worker, useing Hyd driven wheel motors, But ,then i saw your machine . it is very smiler to a cold Rolling mills construction, I wanted to ask you the make of the bender in the picture ? do you have any other pictures of the gearing ? In the absence of Sam, I'll add what I can.

The top roller can either be along for the ride or powered depending on the model of bender. Obviously, more expensive = more driven wheels.

Sometimes models with only 2 driven rollers need to run profiled rollers with a textured surface to help them grip the stock and pull it through. Three driven rollers means this isn't so necessary (on the ones I have crawled over / talked to dealers about).

The tooling is just slipped onto the shaft and has an internal keyway broached into its inner diameter - to correspond with a key on the shaft of course.

Like any other bender you need the correct rollers for the stock you're bending - which is where most of the cost comes in, unless you can machine them yourself (its just a blank cylinder with a curved profile machined round the outside for rolling round tube or a flat outer profile for rolling square tube / flat stock etc, plus flanges at the outer edges to keep the stock on-line, a centre bore for the shaft and a broached keyway). As stated, if you've only got two powered roller, you might need to knurl / texture the rollers to get them to grip, or I guess you could just take more smaller passes when using the tool.

I don't know what make Sam's were, but there are loads about. Called section benders, section rolls, roll benders etc. They're basically all the same & defined by the diameter of their shafts (which dictates stock capacity & minimum bend radius).

You can get manual screw adjustment of the top roller height, or hydraulic adjustment, with / without DRO etc etc.

There's not much to them, really.

Additional - looking back at the thread - Sam's is very obviously an 'Akyapak' - big letters on the first pic!

You can see the hydro cylinder for the top roller on the top of the machine.
