Old surface grinder (help identify)

I wonder if the two locking collars just set up preload on taper roller bearings at the wheel end of the shaft... although the drip-feed oilers might suggest plain bearings. Hmmm.

With the oilers, you can't take those as given for being original. Those may just have been an addition by some previous owner. T'would be nice to see some better photo's of that spindle assembly, to see what the setup is like. Bit hard to make anything barring the absolute basics out from the existing photo's.

These new generation cylinder heads arnt giving enough meat for a good old skim with a cutter...1 or 2 thou with a grinder and its party over. Thats the next thing on my man list is a grinder once the wife has finnished with me re-building the front of my house

Simple.
Most of the cutting will be done by the leading edge of the wheel - the work moves across and most of the wear will be on a certain side of the wheel, with the remainder having very little to do so won't wear much,
But more importantly, when you've ground off 99% of the material you dress the wheel and then take the final cut. For this final cut you will be taking such a small amount off combined with starting with a perfect wheel that you really can't measure or notice any imperfections!


As an aside, I don't think many people would use a surface grinder for a cylinder head, you don't want the finish to be too fine. A cutter on a milling machine is better suited, you need some roughness to bite into the gasket and form a seal.

I used a surface grinder regularly in college, some....well, lets not say exactly how many years ago, but a long time! Apart from engineers, there were cabinet makers. They used to buy planes and keep them for six months for the castings to settle, then I'd face them off for beer money. I had it drummed into my head never to take more than half a thou at a time. If you need more than that then slam it on the mill! Surprisingly, the chippies weren't wrong, I've taken up to 14 thou off some before it was properly flat!

I don't think it's war office, a war office reference is usually WO/xxx/xxxxx or WO/xxx/xx/xxxxx it would appear from looking at the national archive. I'd imaging it's just "Works Order" which will make it harder to ID.
