Probably a lot of welders will just keep the lid on and as you say the clarity makes it even a possibility not to have to raise. For the type of work I do it is often easier to take on/off all the time as I can be doing a few minutes welding then 30 or 40 minutes of measuring, cutting, clambering over tables etc, climbing on/off boats and so on then back to a few minutes welding.
