Oscillating multi-tool Thread..

There's lots of tasks that are either far easier or only possible with a Oscillating Tool...

Oh yuss. Tickled me to find how easy it made some jobs, and I was finding things to do with it I'd not have bothered with before, as it would have meant more farting around.

Really ****** me off that the blades are so expensive and barely last a second

That's what I found when I tried cutting Dexion with a wood blade.
Didn't know it was only a wood blade at the time.

Until you buy one you're probably thinking they are just a gimmick. After you've bought one you think how did I do these jobs before I had it.

Well, sort of.

I thought they were a gimmick too but I bought a cheapie from a local hardware store to try. It seemed useless for any task I tried so I gave it to one of my less favorite people.

When a carpenter came around he used one for all sorts of little jobs. He said it was the bees knees.

I got what he had, a Makita cordless - he was right!

I think the same goes for the blades, get decent ones and use them on the correct material.

I've got the Screwfix Erbaur one... & have to say I think its a brilliant thing. I always wear ear defenders as they do make a racket, but it's quite meaty, and I can't say vibration has been an issue at all with mine.

I have the Toolstation equivalent "Bauker" brand one...

Vibration isn't an issue with lighter cuts for me, but any heavy cuts especially in metals and you start to feel it.

Mines a red one brush less. And eats skirting board, decor panels, and have cut a few awkward bolts with it too. Very useful

It's a beautiful tool for fitting trim and the like, and great for removing bolts that can't be accessed with a grinder or burned out.

I also find it great for making square holes in enclosures for meters/gauges, like when I built my first Rotary Phase Converter.

Don't use ours very often but fantastic tool when needed, have a mains Aldi one and now a cordless Milwaukee which is fantastic

Mulling over some pattern modifications with my newly acquired one.
That, or , perhaps more usefully, finding ways of increasing the tensile strength of my Petrobond sand when rammed .
CO2 elements may yet be the way forwards....
Or sawdust....

Used mine to trim the bottoms off skirting board when fitting a wood floor (avoiding the bead of shame!)....hard to imagine what other tool could have done that particular job.

Very handy if you're like me - to make adjustments to something you've already fixed in place... and then came to the conclusion that something else would foul it.
Multitools are very handy to get into places and cut where nothing else would save your bacon without much mess.
(Admittedly it'd be better if I didn't have these episodes in the first place, but )

I'm in the camp of use them when needed, but use other tools if better suited to a particular task.

Multitools are a godsend for certain tasks though. As others have said, sometimes, they're pretty much the only tool for a certain job.

good for cutting the bottom of doors in situ . just put a strip of quarter ply over the floor or carpet against the door and run the cutter blade along the top of it a nice strait cut

i use mine for cutting in to plaster for socket boxes and chases up walls for cables without breakout.the blades are only the cheap wood ones and cut back to the brick . a few chases and there knacked but i cut new teeth in using a 1mm slitting disk in a grinder .there dog ruff but cut the plaster no probs

Fired my one up today, using a lump of green hand - pad hot glued to one of the saw blades, and a wrap of P.60 cloth on another, in order to clean up and polish up some finning on a casting pattern.
Worked pretty well , but like every endeavour, is always a work in progress....

I did this at in-laws' place, but it wasn't quite enough.
To add to the fun their doorframes weren't square and none of the internal doors closed properly.
I closed each door as far as possible, found a region with a gap, inserted the blade and ran all around the door. That left a nice even gap all round and a smoothly opening and closing door.

I replied to it, then two days on the trot have had to use mine to chop out bolts where nothing else would work.

Previously it hadn't been used in nearly 6 months!

I have a Fein corded one. It’s a brilliant tool when needed, although more often than not it’s just a very expensive sander!
