Outside welding area

Architectural may be a bit grandiose, but I built myself a stand alone porch, onto my little ‘womancave’. It will allow me to ‘not set the place on fire’, when doing projects, and stay dry.

The dimensions are pretty small compared to most folks workspace (about 5.5 feet by 3 feet), and is a wooden frame, topped off with metal roof panels.

I’ve got my welding table set up, a couple of little hitty log stump things, and my little store of metal. As my neighbours get used to this new structure, I shall descretely close off the sides, but otherwise this is it.

As luck would have it, I picked up a big sheet of that coloured plastic welding screen stuff for £5, and I can hang it on hooks around the porch. I mainly got it for the sake of my neighbours dogs watching me through the fence, but it cuts down the wind and any wet stuff, AND can just be lifted off when not needed. Eventually, the back nearest the fence will be permanently fitted with a clear perspex screen, but no hurry until nearer winter.

I do find that when workspace is limited, you get all creative, and find that little bit extra elbow room somehow. I also get very bad ‘space’ envy.

I don't think the arc affects dogs eyes, either that or they are much smarter than humans and instinctively don't look at the arc directly. My last Collie used to sit right beside me when I was welding flukes onto big anchors waiting for me to finish a rod so that I would throw a stone for him whilst I put in a new rod. Next rod done and he was again patiently waiting for the stone to be thrown. My current dog often is right beside me when I am welding and neither of them have ever had sore eyes with it.

As to the shed, I took a lot of thought into the water problem. Inside, the metal shed panels are ‘loosely’ lined in silver bubble wrap, and sealed with aluminium tape. This allowed a good air flow around the inside of the metal panels. There is another small air gap between the bubble wrap and the plywood lining.

I built the hut over winter, and it has been surprisingly free of moisture, unlike the hubby’s metal shed. I think any wet stuff runs down either the metal roof or bubble wrap, and out the hut eaves.

When I did my roof I covered the existing wooden one with that silver bubble wrap stuff and also taped it all together. 0.7mm box section roofing on top and no moisture issues in a couple of years now.

It’s wonderfull stuff, and even on a hot day, the shed stays cool.

what you need to do is let hubby move your stuff into the shed or so he thinks is his stuff

once in there only the good stuff it belongs to you

I seriously doubt it doesn't effect them The thing is they just tough it out better than us weak humans. Seeing my dogs carry on with grass seeds in thier eyes that would make most humans want an ambulance !
Get smart and remove your dogs from the welding area, it's not something I should even think about allowing.
Dog eyes have massive amounts more light gathering ability than ours so it might even effect them more!
It upsets me some that people would do this - have you ever had really bad arc eye yourself ? It's not pleasant !

Have you ever noticed whilst driving that you are struggling to see due to a low Sun, so have to use the sun visor? Have you ever looked at your dog and he is having no such problem and is still looking forward and not even squinting?

My last dog was 15 and never had any eye issues in his whole life and so far this one is the same and the other dogs (3 Collies, 3 Labs, 1 retriever) at my step brothers place, where I and they weld a lot (Step brothers welding, not dogs ) , don't seem to have issues either.

Nope because I don't let my fogs sit in the front of the truck
Generally speaking if I have no reason to have the dog with me I don't expose one to any danger or hazards
Indeed when I was last welding outside I screened the kennels off
