Using the cheapest insulation tester, I tested my good welder at 250v DC (I know should test at 500v and tester will do 500 and 1000v). I got 72M ohm:


Testing the sludge puppy machine gave a resistance of 0.0M ohm...

Going to use hot air method on the windings to dry them but Its looking like the acidity of the oil may have degraded the insulation.

Jerry rigged a cardboard box around the exposed transformer. Using a hairdryer gets the inside up to about 75C.

Let it for 5 hours so far and still reading 0.0M ohm at 250V DC. Pretty safe to say insulation is shot.



Anyone rewound the primary before?
In terms on insulation is Kraft paper still a good option or better to rewind with Nomex etc.

Your best and cheapest option is to weigh that one in for scrap and buy another. There's plenty about under £100.

Sadly I have to agree, it cost me about £60 for the wire alone to wind a secondary in place of the welding winding when I made my 240 to 415 transformer out of a similar welder...
