oxy acet kit

About a week ago I bought some oxy cutting kit form another forum member and then today by dad got me all this kit:

I can't blow through the oxygen flashback arrestor so I'm assuming it has tripped but luckily they're resettable.

Do I really just poke something down the inlet and it will be fine to use?

Also, what are these tips for and what do they fit into?

I'm not sure how you reset the flashback arresters as I've (fingers crossed) never had a flashback but I'd try them first and see if they work before poking around.

As to the tips I think you've a part missing that they screw into that goes onto the black torch... so I don't think they're much use. I think you'll either have to try and buy the rest of the kit or just buy a new torch and a set of nozzles instead, shouldn't cost much.

Actually, I've just blown through it again and its fine. Don't suppose you know the name of the bit I'm missing? I've also got a bent welding tip at home and nothing to screw that into. You say the tips arn't much use, I'm assuming you mean for welding? For now I've only got proopane so I won't be welding with them, maybe brazing.

What do the straight tips go into?

The nozzles with the screw fitting are not for a type 5 torch that is the black one you have there. All you need is a mixer, I'm pretty sure they are readily available.

I know A place called Birmingham welding supplies who repair torches, they would get you one I'm sure.

u need the mixer and extension tube to fit the short nozzles or buy a full new set of the longer cranked copper blowpipes to screw direct to mixer

In any case old nozzles like this might be scrap anyhow, some new swaged ones won't break the bank, you can buy them individually, you don't need a set.

Those tips, shank & cutting attachment all look like they are "Sapphire 3" compatible.
The only issue are the flashback arrestors, they seem to be lacking the reset key.
The ones I have are very similar, but they have a key chained to them from new that fits into the 3rd port which resets them.

Well hopefully I won't ever need to reset them.

You may have to reset them every time the gas pressure upstream is less than that downstream, which could be regularly depending on how you use your kit.

That shouldn't ever happen if whenever I'm done with it I close the tank valve, empty the hoses then back of the regulators and to start it I check there's no pressure on the reg, open the valves slowly, open the reg, purge the hoses then light it, should it?

ive had to reset mine twice in 30 years and tested them a few times .just fill the pipes close off the vales on the bottles and slacken the regs off .the back pressure trips the arrestors if there working properly then just reset them

Surely there won't be any back pressure unless you undo the regulator from the arrestor?

I know welding torches are different to cutting torches in how they mix but when I bought the cutter of W.olly I asked about flashback arrestors and he said:

its personal choice on a flash back, read up on them and decide for yourself if you think you want them.

So I'm assuming cutting torches don't flash back often anyway.

i wouldnt know but would u want to take the chance im bloody sure i wouldnt not insured and take half the street away . no way once would be one 2 many for the sake of a few quid
