Oxy Propane advice before I mess something up please..

Is there a table where you can see what kind of pressures to use depending on what you doing?
or a rule of thumb? like there is for amps when welding different thickness metal?

something like, Oxy at x pressure, Propane at x pressure - for quick focused heating..
something like that?

I use a 3/32 nozzle for everything. 50x8 Flat bar, 100mm box section, whatever. Obviously on bigger pieces it's less efficient than a rosebud heating nozzle, but it still works fine.
Even a 1/16" nozzle would do 18mm round bar without trying.

if you have an ONM nozzle fitted to the torch already, then the same nut fits PNM nozzles also

Hi, wonder if you can help me, looks like I ordered the wrong stuff

So I ordered a 3/32 cutting nozzle
A NM heating adaptor
and 2 heating nozzles....

nothing fits my torch
the cutting nozzles are way too big for my torch, no chance that the nut can slide over it.
Also, the NM adaptor for the heating nozzles is female, the torch is female too..

I reckon they sent the incorrect heating adaptor as their website shows this:

what am I missing? what have I done wrong?

The adaptor shown on its own looks perfectly OK. My advice would be to take all your kit along to a welding equipment suppliers or a BOC gas and gear and ask someone who knows to show you how it all goes together before you have an accident with it, there's no shame in asking, we all have to start somewhere fella

I have done that. local welding supplies.... not interested in showing anything. more interested in showing brand new equipment, sure to say won't be going back there.
3 guys, first thing in the morning, so couldn't be that busy and I was waiting for like 10min, only me there, while they were walking about with papers here and there.

The adaptor looks ok? but the adaptor is just a male to female connection. yes it screws into the torch (the male bit) but then it's female on the other side, the heating nozzle is female as well.

oh. or do you mean the adaptor shown on its own as in the photo from the website that I put up?

on that link on the website it looks more like something that would go on the cutting torch, as long as the nut would then slide over it to screw into the torch. then the heating nozzle could be screwed in the end?

on the cutting nozzles it seems like I have a size too big?
it seems pretty straight forward how everything connects, I just had a look on the website and there's no option for cutting nozzle size, so maybe what I have is for big torches and I have a lightweight torch?

The lever on the black torch introduces more Oxy to blow away the molten metal when cutting.
Don,t know about the extension, never seen that, the 3rd pic shows a cutting nozzle in the black handle

That's not entirely correct. You heat the metal up to just under 1000 degrees which is the temperature required to make steel combustible in pure oxygen. Hitting the lever delivers that blast of pure oxygen required to oxidise the metal - blowing the slag clear is a bonus side-effect. It is possible (but not feasible) to actually turn off the fuel gas once you've got the cut going and the metal is essentially now the fuel in place of the gas.

Yep I meant the one on its own and you've got it right how that fits

Well.. I got a reply this morning from the company I bought the bits from and they say the lightweight black torch I have is for acetylene only and was never made to be used with propane and there's no bits for it to use for propane....?

Getting confused with all this.

Hi mate,

just looked up the ESAB part number, it looks like a standard PNM nozzle like I said to get, unfortunately what i DIDN'T realise is that your torch doesn't take standard NM nozzles Apologies, it looks like it does but it's a smaller version of a NM type nozzle.
unfortunately I think it's new torch time.

You could buy a Victor/ESAB cutting torch for around £60-70 if you look around, that takes standard NM nozzles. Sorry for the hassle.

If it's any consolation, I messed up when I got my oxy-prop setup going too.... accidentally bought 3/8"bsp hoses with a 1/4" on the torch end... and had a 3/8" threaded torch/flashback...

Well, I thought I been messing about with all this for way too long. I got in touch with the company (very helpful) and said "what do I need to start heating up with oxy/propane"

So they have put a list together of all the bits - torch, nozzles, necks, all the stuff, and said "pay for that, I'll send it over, and then what doesn't fit/you don't need, send it back and I'll refund"

that's what I have done. hopefully this will sort it all.
