Hi folks

Sorry to bore you with my novice questions, does anyone know of where or how I can get hold of an oxygen cylinder of a decent size without paying through the roof. Of course being a cheap skate hobbist need things to be as cheap as possible

Do you know the prices, web site only lists cost for deposit which is £60, but nothing about the gas

Bit of an update,

Needing an O2 cylinder I've been doing some research on the cost of gas and rental against rent free. I can report that I'm shocked with what I have learned. Most rent free systems require a pretty major deposit anything between £80 to £130 and then purchase of the gas for around £70 which is filled in a 10L bottle at around 100 bar.

The monthly rent system costs £8 month for the rental and £20 for 5 cubic metres of gas at 200bar, plus a one off collection charge of £15.

I just can't get my head around the cost of the gas on the allegedly cheaper rent free systems. So I'm going for a monthly rental option.

What do you folks think?

If you're only using a cylinder every 2 years say (quite possible with occasional mig) then It's cheaper. The hobby weld oxygen cylinders don't last long as they're only little and only field to 137 Bar. Especially on a cutting torch.

SGS do rent free bottles, 20L filled to 200 bar plus you get a members partial refund on the deposit.

Buy or get an empty air products bottle from local waste disposal and get some one with an account to get them filled ;-)

One local waste sites will not sell you gas bottles and two air products will take a very dim veiw to that. Boc have started individual air codes so they can detect bottle swaps

If you ring them up and ask proberbly say no. but a vist in person waving a tenner normly dose the trick. Have bought loads of bottles from "the tip" when making gas bottle stoves not that I have ever done this to boc before they fetched out the barcode system. not as quick and easy as getting an account tho.
Rental is still a lot cheaper than rent free extortionate half refills IMO.

in looking for a bigger oxy bottle too as using rent free on 9l bottles now and its costing a fortune. Either looking for a good rental for oxy as i have quite cheap rent free propane, or looking for a decent priced oxy acetylene deal but not having much luck with the acetylene side of things, or not in enough capacity to make it worth the money for the amount i use anyway

Hi 137 bar refills from hobby weld 200 bar from Adams gas is better but think I get 230 bar from boc
137 bar= 1987 psi
200 bar= 2900 psi
230 bar= 3335 psi

It's aimed at the low user, if you have one bottle sat for 3 years on rental it's expensive. I have a BOC bill in front of me for a J size Acetylene for £109.68 and the Oxygen rental will turn up soon about the same. Some rentals you can get the deposit back if you no longer need the bottle so you only pay for gas.

I used to have an Air Products account, 3 bottles on monthly rental (Oxy/Acet/Argon) and each month the rental would creep up by a pound or so. In two years the rental went from £20 per month to nearly £40 a month for the same bottles!
That was when I handed my bottles back and went to rent free.
