Paint strip / Dip tank for wheels

Hello again,

looking at doing one of these due to some coatings been pain to blast, just wondering what people use to do it in and products ?

im not to bothered if doesn't strip the wheels super fast, leaving for a few hours or over night is fine as i do other things but would be great help to make life easier when blasting

Methylene Chloride with a layer of water on top. Put in a HDPE, Polypropylene or "blue barrel" container.

Would a wheelie bin suit? (they were taking back the nice big ones in Bristol and replacing with much smaller due to providing recycling tubs.

Thank you, any ideas what places i can get it from/price ? or how much i would need if i used a blue barrel

was also looking at that boistrip wheel stripper at £120.00 for a 25ltr probably wouldn't be enough

I think a wheelie bin may be OK, I've not tried one. I've used plastic cold water tanks in the past. Don't use PVC - Meth Chloride strips PVC insulation off cables

Just got myself a container and about to buy some stripper in next few days, does the Meth Chloride need to be heated up like the biostrip ? what coatings if any would it struggle with.

just with it going to cost a good few £100 to half fill i need to be as sure as i can.

Dichloromethane is the same stuff.

Do NOT heat it, it's volatile enough as it is. You MUST cover it with water or keep it in a closed container or it will evaporate.

OK, good job i asked

and its powder coatings, and some primers im struggling with and i think plasticoat but not 100% sure it was plasticoat.

We use methchoride as well, but ours has a 10% HF acid for stripping wheels, normally takes a couple of hours (except audi wheels). Some with only a thin coating like honda take 10-15 mins!

Nasty stuff though you'll need proper ppe, Performance chemicals is the place to try..

It's made for powder coat, they way I understand it is. The meth choride soften the coating and allow's the HF to attack the base metal, comes off in sheets just dont leave overnight

Eurochem Northern do something similar, it's called Atlas Powdercoat remover.

C-K: maybe as well to test your tank with a small about before pouring the lot in!

Another point, methchloride apparently forms dilute hydrochloric acid when in prolonged contact with water, so completely immerse items below the water line and don't use a metal tank.

does methchloride do anything to powdercoat like soften it or make it easier to blast stubborn bits/corners as i will be blasting after im not expecting a perfect clean/stripped wheel just get almost all of it off then blast the stubborn bits then lightly blast to give a key.

It does soften some powdercoat, it depends on the type. I soak small items in methchloride before blasting.

To be honest I soak everything in MC, it saves time, grit and air. It also means I can blast at lower pressures which helps with fragile items.

Another thing I've just remembered - MC also softens rubber, so anything with rubber bushes in shouldn't be dipped.

Aren't the fumes from meth also a tad undesirable for breathing? I was advised that it was probably a worse choice than even caustic soda, on the human sociability front, so one other point to possibly consider.

The fumes are hazardous, though not unpleasant. Best to use it outside.
