Paint terminology confusion - urethane vs. 2k

I am not convinced by the desire to use cellulose to get a period correct finish. As far as I am aware the paint used at the factory was not actually cellulose. With all the work you are putting into this project I would be looking for durability in the finish. I went for clear over base on my MGB.

I agree, it's unlikely the factory used celly. Celly is a PITA, one tiny drop of spilt brake fluid and it's game over even if you wipe it off 2 seconds later and anything other than blue goes dull before your eyes under the sun.

Try Max Meyer Selemix, available as 2K or 1K, I've done all sorts of vintage stuff with it but it's only readily available in standard RAL and BS colours etc. P&M Panels in Warrington are not too far away by the looks of it....

I share your philosophy on use of all things cheap - definitely part of the do it properly school - hence my need to understand exactly what I'm doing or specifying for a job.

I'm not quite clear on the need to re-prime the shell with the 2k epoxy, given the electrophoretic primer applied by British Motor Heritage. As I mentioned they recommend a polyurethane surfacer before top coating; its just I'm struggling to find this - hence my initial post. Am I right to think that a 2k primer / surfacer can be one and the same?

Would using the epoxy primer instead (assuming it is compatible with the e-coat) be a belt and braces approach to give the seam sealer and filler better surface to stick to? Would a urethane paint be of a similar standard?

I have a call in to BMH to discuss; as a lot of folk seem to swear by it I'll get their view on the epoxy system at the same time

On new panels I always remove the E coat and epoxy prime and then 2K hi build wet on wet.

Not strictly hijacking, but if you are going for a single stage topcoat what would you use?

Oops just noticed the date of this thread!!

I'm looking for a single stage topcoat for a Monte Carlo yellow Saab, and it's a bit confusing as to which brand and where to buy it from. All local paint shops have there own brand which they recommend.

Where's the best place to buy the Lechler one. I'm in Edgware so not too far from you Langy!!

I use Alan at Colorite in boston manor road, hanwell as he tints it what ever colour you require.
