Painting a porch.

Sorry, couldn't resist. The old ones are the best ones after all. OK. The governor wants me to paint his Porsche 550 Spider replica. It's GRP but he would like it to replicate the brushed ally. I'm thinking maybe between COB brushing in straight lines with 400 sanding pad? Anyone

cant imagine it will look very convincing but what do i know

I would have thought a wrap would be the best way to replicate that sort of finish.

(Brings up memories of being in a plant some where in the Pittsburgh region, looking at a machine putting that finish on containers still wet from manufacture - aluminium fines in, on and around everything. Leaving silver footprints everywhere. People in the place, including managers, who must have been on something, they were all so obviously spaced out!)

Are you sure it's a Porsche and not a ferrari

Erm. Looks like there's a lot of VW actually. There is no way he's going to go with a wrap. Anyway. Challenge is on. Got lots of silver in stock so experiments will be commencing soon. I do like a challenge as you know.

It will be on show with all the other projects I've done at our monthly car and bike breakfast meet. There are a lot of people queuing up to see it as well as the Capri ,Volvo, Mini and the Brat. All of which I've featured on chronicalled on here.

I saw some plates in dunelm yesterday that looked like brushed ally. It looked like it was painted then a brush dragged across the surface to make the effect.

Probably a bit hard to do with a bascoat as it isn't thick enough or will dry too quick.

Exactly that Bert which I why I was thinking a fairly coarse sanding sponge, tack and satin clear.

Do you know an old school painter that used to do the wood grain & combed effect on woodwork? If so, they may have some ideas. All long gone I would think, though. I think they used 2 colours, a lighter base coat to show through, used to be a lot of it on older places around here, but haven’t seen it for years.

Bullett. The roller is a fair suggestion but I suspect, when doing the shell, the basecoat would flash too quickly to have any affect. I'd still need to key it up pre clear anyway for intercoat adhesion.

Cobbler. I'm the only old skool painter I know. 2 base colours is a good suggestion. Maybe a silver met base followed by a silver blue mica drop coat ?

No worries , spraying paint is not something i am very familiar with so the time constraints are not something i have any idea about
what would happen if you put on the base and then rolled the first coat of clear ?
