Do you know an old school painter that used to do the wood grain & combed effect on woodwork? If so, they may have some ideas. All long gone I would think, though. I think they used 2 colours, a lighter base coat to show through, used to be a lot of it on older places around here, but haven’t seen it for years.

Known as scumble. Often seen on church pews to make them look posh.
Normally a cream undercoat and then you apply a brown paint or varnish using a very worn brush that leaves lines in the paint that look like wood grain. You create knots using a cloth.

Very very skilled process. When we were renovating our church over 30 years ago my Uncle did the scumble work and made it look easy. I had a go and it was anything but easy.

More recently they did more refurbishment and found it nearly impossible to find a painter who could do scumble work. We got one guy who said he could do it but the results were nowhere nearly as good as my Uncles work.

Well, I don't think I'm looking for authentic. More a suggestion. As I often say to the client when pricing comes into the conversation. "At what distance do you want it to look great"?
