Perhaps it's that I'm "old school" but I can't get on with the on line methods.
I remember trying to develop a shape in 3" (76.2mm) tube and trying tube mitre.
The pattern when printed should have come out as 239.5mm long but try as I may it never did.

And then there's the, what if it's bigger than A4? I built some off set square to rounds once that
you could have parked a car under.

I did not learn laying out until I was thirty+, I was just not in the right industry, or needing it actually. Once shown by a proficient person, who was not really a 'teacher' I realised that it is all just good old geometry, and simple geometry at that. Offset square to rounds are more challenging, but still simple geometry.

Once I knew what I was doing, I used 2D CAD to do the layout and then sent it to the CNC monkey via dxf . I did teach the fabricators, those who wanted to/ were able to learn, so at least they will remember.

Yep, and we are lacking the guys to even teach it now or the will to do try and to think I used to get shouted at for needing a calculator. One big nasty computer virus and all work would grind to a hault

If you can TIG weld you can gas weld

I know someone who can tig weld and he can't even light my gas torch I can gas and tig and can't see the similarity between the two processes tig need much more concentration.

I can kind of tig weld to an extent where the bits I stick together stay together. first time I tried gas welding I just made a mess but it didn't take long to get into it. I think the main issue I had was the gas torch was bigger than the tig torch and held differently

Its not likely that all computers and calculators will suddenly be wiped out, its probably near impossible. In a nuclear holocaust we might have other things on our mind than sheet metal work ?

Having said that I will draw it out, its not hard, I just like nice printed CAD drawings rather than faffing about with string.

there is a place for cad drawings, this isn't one of those places. CAD goes a long way to making certain jobs harder, more time consuming and more expensive than they need to be.

I love cad drawings, rendered models and so on, but only really use them for machining parts up

Its been a while science I did any gas welding to say the least but how does a tig welder how to set the gas mix for the right flame for the job by colour? Getting the right flame for the job is the big part of the job
