Parkinsons 38A J restore

I collected this Parkinsons Perfect 38A vice today, going to strip & clean it up proper, although surprisingly the quick release and screw action is smooth as is..

Some questions please.
I think they did swivel base as an extra looking at the old brochure, is it likely any of those are still kicking around?

Fully closed there there are a fair few gaps, any tips on getting new hardened vice jaws for one of these?

The bar is bent, i've freed off the ends to turn, not sure whether to just cut it off and replace with new bar and just weld on some ends or do something to salvage, the ends at least..

That's my planned next step for tomorrow night so will post pics and if you need any dims just let me know.

Nigh on choked the vac a few times with the amount of crud brushed off.
Got the jaws out, Patience! diesel, torch, impact, all over a while, bolts are good to reuse.
This is after initial clean up believe it or not.. all the greased crud in the mech has saved it a lot from seizing up.

I haven’t got a vice fetish but I will say Parkinson made some of the finest milling Machines you could buy and big gear cutters

Managed to degrease a fair bit.



The jaws are well used but plenty of meat, they fitted badly on the faces of the vice, bulging rust on both sides, will file vice faces flat and linish the other jaw. New bolts coming, threads are shagged.



Wire wheels, flap discs, polishing mops on lever and bar knob, polishing mop wax should stop it rusting for at least a week.



This lump is up next, will make a new bar, its too bent for me to straighten



Thinking smooth black? I would like to pick all the lettering out in silver but sure to make a pigs ear of that..

Nice restoration!

Whatever colour you paint it don't use a primer unless it's the same colour. When the paint chips off through use the primer will show.

Yes, I think there is help available for that

What, people taking parts off & losing them?

Are there one or two threaded holes underneath yours, bigegg? Some of then never had that cradle, but rather just a piece of bent steel.

Your vice was often supplied to the MOD(War department), The GPO, The ROC and a host more of government departments.
Look out for the stamps on the vice. Near.

The Parkenson Cast logo on the moving jaw.
On the Main body. Near casting marks.
On the Moan body skirt.
Underneath by the fixings holes.
