It depends on what its for......there are times when even a standing fillet like this needs to be full pen so it could be veed or veed with a landing and back gouged.......it could be veed from both sides or just one......if lamellar tearing is an issue then its veed from both sides........if its critical there is usually more effort put into the joint prep

Anything 6mm or more I get in there a bit at least mainly for piece of mind, I'm probably what's termed an over welder, that is to say most professionals would baulk at my multipass affair as they'd have done one. But 1 I'm indulging myself 2 I like to cap it with a sexy looking weld to cover up the not so pretty one. That said one thing that really bugs me is people assuming a pretty weld is a good weld, I know this from my not so long experience to be totally untrue. So all you mig like tig and superweavers take note. Been there done that, hidden porosity, slag inclusions, lack of pen' etc etc I prefer strong to photographic. Bit like my ugly mug ! Lol

Yes Al, correct, pink packaging on those rods. Your brain is full of electrode info, in only mastermind would let you select it as your specialist subject...........

I've never been a great fan of MIG for use on thicker materials (perhaps wrongly) so it will be interesting to see a comparison of both dip and spray transfer compared to a 6013.
Looking forward to Part 5 with the 7018.
Dip should be deeper pen than 6013 (CO2 points it Argon spreads it wider, 100% CO2 is globular so neither dip nor spray)....Spray will be a lot better
I appreciate hes enjoying himself but this info is available in books or on the net

When Lincoln first introduced Sub Arc Welding to the UK, it had been very limited before, I soon realised that there were lots of people who put themselves forward as "Experts" but none of them really knew much and they couldnt answer the questions I asked (I was completely new to it).
I read up some literature and then I started welding......just changing one thing at a time, cutting out a sample and mounting it on a board....I discovered lots of facts that no-one had ever mentioned....Single arc, twin arc, tandem arc, the effect of travel speed, voltage, current etc etc......the books gave me a rough guide but I could actually put numbers on some parameters.......Like @MichaelV I thoroughly enjoyed myself and then one day the chance of a big order came along and I could demonstrate my findings to the customer....who was impressed and then asked the management if I could be allowed to help them....Im still in contact with them now 30 years or more later..
I have no idea whatever happened to the board...I left it when I was invited to leave so I assume they slung it in a skip.

As someone who spends a lot of time specifying welds as an engineer, it’s healthy to put yourself in the boots of the folk carrying them out.
