Pillar drill powered table lift

Got myself a progress 1s and its very nice but the table is heavy and linear actuators are probably fun so plan to get one to lift the table from underneath. Table height is and 80 Cm so actuatior about 65 Cm with 35 Cm of travel should do it. Anyone looked at this and have any suggestions please ?

You could motorise the jack, but bear in mind the bit you need to drive raises and tilts as the jack is raised.

That is cool. As mine is floor standing I have a bit more room underneath. Thinking one of these with maybe some bracing structure but certainly very much along the same lines you have done.

You could counter-balance the table with a weight, wire & pulley system, then you wouldn't need such a powerful actuator. You'll just need to work out what the likely maximum weight of any workpiece/vice &c you'll have on the table.

Such a counter weight could be heavier than the table as a screw actuator will prevent the table from rising unless the motor is turning.

I didn't make any arrangement to allow the table to swivel whilst connected to the jack, that may be something to consider.

I got an old floor standing Meddings pillar drill....same problem as u.......two handed twisting job to get the table to go up, down not a prob......no wind up mech as it's so old........
considered the cable and weight type a thing..but no time at presant..
will watch this thread with interest.....

Where did you find the centre of balance to be for table plus clamp and how tolerant was it to being pushed up away from it please ?

Trial and error. My first thought was to put the jack in the centre of the table, but it jammed when raising it, so then I moved it as close to the column as I could get it and it's fine. The jack is a bit stiff for the 1st couple of turns, but that's probably because the mechanical advantage is at its lowest due to the angle of the arms. I keep the column & screw well oiled.

Using linear actuators you'll have a constant force.

I've got a floor standing meddings & I just rigged up a pulley off an architects drawing board at tha back of the drill with bowden cable to a couple of sash weights to counterbalance the [heavy] table, it's worked ok for the past 50 odd yrs, even the el cheapo drills now have a rack & pinion.

So sounds like I can’t come off the table without it binding.

This is the sort of height option foam is 70 Cm but I’m wondering about a collar on the shaft and actuator each side.

Alternatively couple of threads on the table may I could connect in there. Any idea if that’s going to be a common thread ?

I've got a floor standing meddings

It makes you wonder just how many of these old Meddings drills are still knocking around as I also have a floor standing Meddings

So I found a hi lift jack and my £ 1.04 actuator came in the post. Wondering if I can fit a 70mm id sleeve to the column and lift that. Any idea where I might get such a thing ? Most seems 70 od.

eBay. A 99p bid one that not many people seemed to want. It goes in and out but I haves checked it can lift anything.

What size ID do you actually need? That looks like scaffold tube.......
If you're going to be lifting the 'collar', won't you need to design it so that it's being lifted from two opposing sides? Otherwise it will want to 'cobble' and jam on the drill shaft?

On mine it raises the table from one point of contact at the front of the collar.
