The shaft is 70 mm. Either I’ll get away with it because I’ll have the jack close or I’ll fit twin actuators and push from both sides.
If you're going to be lifting the 'collar', won't you need to design it so that it's being lifted from two opposing sides? Otherwise it will want to 'cobble' and jam on the drill shaft?

What's the other bit that clamps around the pillar that is resting on top of the table do ?I posted some pics of the one we lift the table with some time ago, it consists of a pulley a length of Bowden cable & a lump of lead, The lead is the counter balance simple & cheap has worked for 20 years without a problem.
