Pin hole in a steel tank

This tank has been empty and dry for a week now...i will purge it with Argoshield for a couple of mins to play safe and attack with the soft solder method, thanks for all the input and replies lads

Wonder if it were brazed or soldered....how it would go on the E10....ethanol attacks stuff like that doesn't it.

They lined steel tins with - er- tin, to avoid corrosion, for a century. Loads of brass fittings on fuel systems?

I don’t think so. I would solder it after initial heating with a hot air gun.

500e sums it up. Don’t take unnecessary risks.

The last tank I did was a set of 3 rust holes on the lower part of the filler neck.
Just were a foam seal sat.

I removed it, cleaned the paint and Honda rust prevention coat.

I got some brass plate, from a Mamod fire box repair and made a patch to fit. This was tinned.

I fluxed the area and the area and gave the area a good solder coat. With a gas torch.

Using a 3/4 pound copper bit soldering iron, heated in gas flame until the flame had a good green hint to it.
Pressing the iron onto the patch, held temp in place with flux, the iron made both parts coated with solder fuse.

This time I had no solder run off. If you do just tilt back and heat.

You will be OK.

Pin hole in a steel tank

I'm looking for a pin big enough to fill that hole, looks more like m6 size to me. Flux round the hole and warm it up then tin it then fill it with solder, shouldn't take long.

You can understand us....even if you don't like our pronunciation.

Back to the OP:
I worked in an old time garage about 35 years ago, and the owner repaired allot of steel gas tanks.
Outside:
Sand blast to clean (just use a simple hand help unit around the spot)
Check for added holes nearby (Many times there was).

Heat up a soldering copper inside the shop, carry it outside, bring some flux and lead to complete the job.

Tank all done..made myself an iron from some copper solid bar i had and mounted it in a hacksaw holder after a bit of lathe work on both..(big shout out to @Pete.) for the offer of a loan of his iron and heavy solder but had no time to wait for post...tank pressure tested and holding good. big thanks to everyone

soft solder big copper bolt nicely tinned , bakers fluid tin surface then additional blob with cooling down bolt or you cold use an old 1pence tinned first then laid over and heated with the bolt ! easy peasy .

I have a length of solid copper rod that was the arm of a large ballcock. Now I have a use for it - soldering iron heads! Thanks!
