pintle? NATO hitch/hook to fit a standard car?

I have potentially found myself a cheap Sankey trailer not a million miles (more like 100yds!) from my house - pending speaking to the deceased owner's son.

It has a HUGE ring as a towing eye - 3" inside diameter, possibly? - which I'm guessing is a NATO standard towing eye (as opposed to the smaller 50?mm ring on agricultural trailers).

If I managed to get it for a reasonable price, how could I tow it using my OVLOV?

Presumably I'd need a different tow hitch to the one currently fitted? (which has a 32mm pin + 50mm ball) - it appears to be some kind of hook? and described as a "pintle"?

sankeys are very tall at the hitch ,,, they are also heavy and quite tall , not the ideal trailer unless you have something like a land rover to tow them with. They rust badly too.
That said they are bringing good money at the moment but they are hard to work with. Thing squaddie proof and you get the jist of them.

You require a proper NATO pintle hitch as you point out, they can be had off the bay for 50 -70 quid usually. You MUST be careful to not unlock the hitch swivel if the sankey has a swivel eye, the pintle can rotate upside down when driving leaving all the weight on the opening jaw.

sankey trailers are designed to be pulled slightly nose down, don’t be tempted to mod it to to level, it’ll throw the Volvo all over the road. Have you any pictures of the trailer?

Basically, old fella over the road died just after Xmas. Son (only family) was clearing house but stopped due to Mad Crow disease.
My dog escaped into the garden, looking for the cat food and when I went in back garden, I noticed it under a pile of old rubbish - and looking as though it hasn't moved for 20 years or more.

I would say forget towing with your Volvo, the only option you'll have is mod the trailer which will devalue it. If you bought it cheap, clean it up and sell it and buy an Ifor P6e.

Ratty old trailers are mugs game you will never win.

Land Rover people love Sankeys but I've never seen the appeal as a normal trailer, they are high so you have to lift stuff in, early ones don't have tail gates. They do rot.

It will tow like a dog behind a Volvo.

If its rusty be wary ,, the military veh boys want original , and you can spend more than its worth sorting out a rusty one , leaving you having spent more than the price of a trailer you would like , and ending up with an expensive trailer thats a pita to use ,

If your vulva is anything like mine, you've got a removable tow hitch.

There will be welding and fabrication involved.

Probably not.

We've a flat bed trailer, with a rabbit's head ( that's what we call them here), which we can swap over to a ring pull, we had machined, which makes it legal, as we don't have the paperwork, which in turn makes it an agricultural trailer...

Sounds like a narrow track, not a desirable trailer anyways

I imagine so - as long as the pintle is type approved, or car is pre '97.
