pipe to flange attempt 1

Hey guys Its been a few months since I last welded been so busy with stuff but got to weld a flange to some pipe what you guys think

It was practice and in the flat position I'm trying to learn pipe welding to various success
I never seem to get comfortable

Wish i could get such pieces to practice on.

In fact getting bits of pipe of that size is my most difficult task (short of paying full price for them)

Anyway Ill stop moaning and say it looks pretty good to me. Was it root and cap ? (Cant get an idea of the size of the pipe and flange from the pic ?)

Honestly?

It would fail a visual inspection. Slag traps where the bead has wandered. Rod angle is too low and tie-ins a bit of a mess. Coating needs cleaning off way back from the weld.

Getting there though, keep practising

fillet weld

Looks like a 4" slipon flange with 4" pipe of course, essentually a fillet weld around the pipe, which with more practice you'll get it to look better,,,when you start welding pipe both the flange and the pipe will have a bevel..

I think it is 4 inch. Thanks for all the comments im gunna practice when I get chance. And im the lucky few who is a scrap murchants son so I get off cuts all the time.

Yes mate I did a seam round the inside

Not bad for a begginner , how many runs ? I generally run a root about 100 amps then cap it off about 120 amps using 3.25 rods and do a nice weave pattern around it , take the paint off of the pipe and flange before you start !

Not bad for starters, you just need to pay a bit more attention to detail like keeping rod angles and travel speeds consistent as you travel round the pipe, stop/starts etc etc.

What size rods did you use out of interest

wow that is brilliant im not quite there yet as you guys may notice.
now you guys ask what rods i recently been using merex rods but the supplyer i use who seems to give me a better deal then most cant stock any at the moment so im using nexus own make they are ok ish but gettin better results in vertical up which i will post later

Not so sure about "Nexus" though, although a few year ago, supplier sent us a batch, instead of our usual Lincoln rods.

Nexus rods were brutal, was like constant arc blow, we sent them back!!

Maybe they have improved??

Id agree with the Nexus, although it was some years since iv used any, Im sure I had some Nexus FCAW as well for something that was equaly as horiable, Murex run just fine (ESAB IIRC these days)... Mind Rods seem to change with the wind these days never know whos bought who out, Bohler rep was in the other day with his usual yearly spill, and there now called something different..... Lincoln still seams to be Lincoln but I wonder for how long.
