lionleg tthis is true the British there are the ones that run the refinery,, I worked there for about 4 months in the late 90's we went there to run pipe and supports as they were expanding the refinery almost twice as big after we left, the work was good the food was good but we were confined to our compond which was an old army post Barracks, we had 2 outtings one to the Caspian sea , the other was to a little town which I don't remember the name,, maybe Ataru???? but I want to touch on this subject ,,,in my using the term Brit offend you or anyone else reading this post ??? I know I used that word loosely But if in fact you took offence or anyone else,,,, I offer a sincere apology to all ,,,,,,,,,,,,,I sensed something awray with the response from Rrunnach which I also offer an apology!!!! i have worked on pipelines in the uk , although sat in an excavator , the welders are invited to work on the jobs and you hardly ever see young guys doing it , yes the money is good but lying on your back in sometimes cold dirty water or mud is not fun , if they have many weld failures they are run off the job and not used again .

Fastfingaz, I worked offshore in the Caspian. As you say the food was good. I stayed in Atyrau before and after going offshore. It's grown a lot by the sound of it. The biggest oil find in the world in the last 30 years or so is just off Atyrau so there is / has been a lot of money invested locally. The locals I had working for me whilst offshore were earning around US $2k a month. Fantastic money. To them. And no offence I'd taken to your use of the term Brits. It's what we usually call ourselves whilst working abroad !
Chris -law you are spot on mate. They are invited usually. The companies only want men they know and trust. This is what I said earlier in this thread with regards to you will NOT see these jobs advertised anywhere. If I did, I would be highly suspicious straight away.
