agree totally with ragnarok.. no penetreation here. You must chamfer both edges and lay a root first with about a 3mm gap. Nice bit of neat welding but no strength. Make sure when setting out the test piece you have good strong tacks either end

I understand why i need to chamfer the edges, and i have bought a cheap angle grinder and also a grinding and cutting disc. Its not as loud as i thought, but the dust is evil! Even with a breathing mask my nostrils are black after 20 minutes of grinding or cutting
I've been tacking the top and bottom of each side to prevent the pieces from contacting inwards.
I'm still practicing and learning from mistakes, but all is going quite well.
