As a continuation of sorting me and the mrs's motorbikes out ready for the road has lead to cleaning mine and hers carburettors


Well being Japanese the float bowl screws are seriously siezed screw slots are just distorting.
Well to my rescue comes my plier wrenches that grip hard enough to grab the domed head tight enough to crack the corrosion, have to say i strained to get the buggers to go and go with a crack they did.



The ox and knipex are actually pretty much as good as each other the ox being older only let down with the ox is the chrome is awful but the adjustment is better, if you are a weekend warrior they are perfect.

The fact they’re JIS doesn’t help. Usually mullered before you buy the bike!

Pliers Wrenches are great. They work like a ratchet spanner too. I find i use them a lot for gripping and squeezing stuff as the jaws stay parallel. If you need to assemble something with small "press fit" parts they're great as they keep everything straight while pressing together.

when I buy something ...the first thing I do is to unscrew carb screws and any nuts / bolts that are exposed....
where no stress is involved replace with st/steel or brass on the exhausts.....
all nuts n bolts are assembled with a few drops of synth eng oil or axle grease depending where they are..........
works for me...bit OTT really but keeps me happy......
when I bought my used forklift, the first job was to remove all the wheel nuts one at a time, oil up and refit....
it does take time but gives u chance to inspect other stuff at the same time....

St/Steel screws etc are very cheap up to 6mm dia.....

oddly for me this is the best condition bike ive ever owned. 17,000 miles and 3 owners me being the first and knowing the last 2

Have too admit I really don't like them as a tool. I have a couple of sets in different sizes I bought as I though they would be really useful. Turns out not so much only the 12inch one I really have found too be of any use.

I just use standard 1/4 bits. I would rather they smash than mar the head up.

Ah yes, the precise reason I bought my set of JIS screwdrivers. And yes, it really grinds my gears. Not enough that we have Phillips and Pozidriv, which need completely different drivers if you don't like skinned knuckles, but if you want to ride Japanese bikes you need JIS as well. I just wish they would pick one and sick to it globally.

Put a driver bit in the slot and tap it sharply with a small hammer before you turn it, never failed yet when I've done bike carbs. Using the correct bit is also essential.

I use this technique on most things. Hex and torx bolts especially

I hear water keeps the combustion temp down so you can run it harder.
Iron oxide provides lubrication


These are the zx carbs, the whole bike is mint just a small amount of dried fuels in the bowls. cleaned all the orifices these the cleanest carbs ive ever worked on i think
