Polish

Hi all, I'm about to spray my vespa frame with high gloss cellulose paint.

Here a couple of questions then:

How long do I have to wait before I can polish it?

Do I T-cut it first?

Hi Max,
In your shoes, I'd leave the paint for a min of 2 weeks and up to a month before polishing it. How many coats are you applying? Rubbing down between applications? You going to apply lacquer as a final finish?

I'd leave the T-Cut where it is, it can be very brasive - a mid-cut polish may well refine the finish enough without being too severe.

Hello SBF,

I don't see any point in lacquering cellulose, and it only complicates any possible spot repair at a later date?

also cellulose lacquer dont age well,it yellows pretty fast.

I don't rub down between coats unless something goes wrong with one, just don't leave long between coats.

as pedro says,i mist coat to get it sticky,then 2 coats wet on wet.then walk away,to let it dry.seen more crap get into paint by people hovering around it.

cellulose is very fast drying and you can polish it after 24 hours ive polished it after 20 minutes but have had lots of experience with it.
celluslose usually goes on very well
you can also paint it, leave to dry flat it again with 1500 gritt wet and dry and it will polish up to a mirror finish easily, if you do do that make sure you have put enough paint on though

Hi guys and thanks for your replies.

I'm planning to put at least 3 coats and no lacquer. Is a high gloss finish (or should be I hope :whistle:

).

I'm not in any rush, so I will leave the polishing for a while.

So far I have sprayed a few bits and the paint does dry really fast.

Hopefully I will spray the frame over the weekend and I will post some pics for you.

If you want a high gloss finish you need some good quality high flash thinners for the top coat. Don't go for the fastest, medium is good so it doesn't dry out as you put it on. I use some Palinal make which works well, our local paint supplier carries it but it is dearer than your gunwash/primer thinners.

Thanks for that. I did get some high gloss thinner with the paint. :cool:

Anyway, did some more spraying today and had a bit of a bother on the last coat. Everything was fine until the orange peel appeared!

Was it me to heavy handed with spray gun? :ashamed:

Can I just sand it and spray again?

yep,sand it,the coat again,or if you have'nt broke thru you could polish it up

I have sanded it already without breaking through :clapping:

and tried to polish it but I didn't like the finish. :whistle:

I will put another coat of paint, hopefully next weekend. :cool:

Hi, I have taken advantage of the afternoon off and of the nice weather to spray my frame.

I have managed 2 coats before I ran out of thinner. :mad:

hate to ask,but where is the gloss????
is that a metalic paint? if so you will not be able to plolish it too much.
without cutting thru to the paint.

I never touch cellulose till it's had a few days to harden off. That would shine up as it is with some cutting compound like Farecla G3. Use your good thinners in the top coat then leave it till the weekend and try compounding it then use a good wax polish on it. How many coats have you got on it now ? You would have to be very heavy handed to go through more than a couple of coats unless on an exposed edge and really pressing on.

Thanks pedrobedro. I have managed 2 coats on the frame then I run out of thinner. Will have to get some more before putting another coat. However on the headset etc, I have done about 5!

One question while I'm at it: do I use the same dilution of thinner (50/50) for the top coat or should I use more?

with metalic if you go thru,you getting shearing.which is where your cut thru to metal particals and they show as like a silvery edge.
are you sure you dont have a base coat there??? looks like it could be.

That's base coat mate, bite the bullet and lacquer it.

Use a synthetic or even better 2K, but don't kill yourself

Looks like a basecoat to me aswell.

Why dont you try a waterbased basecoat as opposed to 2k base. This stuff isnt as bad for your health and the smell isnt so potent. Infact it does smell like poster paint. It will need lacquering afterwards but the stuff levels like you wouldnt imagine.

I have my waterbased scheme and can honestly say that I wouldnt change back to solvent for anything, otherthan doing outside spraying in minus zero temperatures LOL.
