buying a good quality welder is well worth the money . any crappy welds are then down to the operator not the machine

Ive found, with other stuff in life, that, when you start, it does not make a whole load of difference how good your equipment is (within reason, obviously!)

Its only when you progress, and your skill level rises, that you can then notice the difference between a cheap and expensive item.

I think this applies to evreything from golf clubs, to paint brushes, to welders, camera, etc. etc.

It's very true. There is the valid argument that with decent kit to start with your more likely to achieve success in the new found skill. Reasons are not always that it's better but if you've spent a fortune on top gear your more likely to give it the effort to warrant the initial layout.

That's sort of true, but then it's sort of not true as well. Better equipment will always allow you to concentrate on doing/learning the job in hand rather than faffing around battling the shortcomings of the equipment.

There is both sides of the coin. Sometimes it's better to learn on top spec gear and stand a chance that the equipment is not restricting your learning. BUT. the other side of the coin is it high spec gear is built around professionals and learning on something that high spec can be a failure also. I'll take a camera as it was used as an example. A basic digital cam will be a better starting point into that hobby before forking out on a dslr with every setting under the sun.

Fairly Short of space yeah lol. Not sure why that happened... It was meant to say biggest lol :-/

Seeing a weld means nothing, you could get two owners with different skills, one would look good the other rubbish, any machine working correctly will produce a perfect weld with an experienced operator.

Buying a good quality MIG will not give you good quality welds, it will make it easier for you to progress to good quality welds.

Yeah I know that lol. Hence why I wanted to see photos. Obviously some people on here have more experience than others, use different methods etc.

I appreciate the replies folks. I'm not the best welder but there again I'm not the worst.
I welded daily years ago and then didn't touch a welder for about 6 years ish. I then bought a crap wolf 140 unit to get back into it and it wasn't too shabby but not all good either. Like everyone else has said it's the welder that produces the quality of the weld.

Just swapped a SIP Topmig 150 for a Portamig 235 - absolutely no going back! The new rig was expensive but in my view worth every penny!
