Pouring from 20/25L drums/containers

Before I go and drill a hole in the cap and epoxy a piece of tube in there, I'm just going to check if there is a simple method/knack to pouring from a 20 litre container, when full, without waste. If there is a knack, I'll be damned if I've ever found it.

When decanting into say 5L containers, whether I pour fast, have a massive funnel to aim for etc., nothing seems to stop it peeing down the side of the container. They only seem to start pouring more sensibly when they get below 3/4's or so full.

I always just hold the drum sideways and very rarely do I have issues. Just have to be positive in your actions but not tilt too far as you need to let the air in at the same time. Some newer containers have a moulded in tube for air so that theoretically you can pour out of the front but I have never had real success doing it that way.

Nope. I've tried pouring sideways, as works with the smaller containers, but with the opening being so far away from the target then, I've never had much success using that technique. Dire would probably best describe my last attempt using that technique.

Never had an issue with it myself, used to fill the tanks on the boat I had from a drum and certainly didn't want diesel on the deck

I must just have no finesse then. Picked up 25L of kerosene today, and I bet I must have lost at least half a litre trying to pour some into a 5L container. I know it's not stupidly expensive per litre, but it's made my **** cheeks clench so tight I doubt I'll use the throne for a week.

I think the secret is to be balanced, tilt over the drum at a reasonable speed but only tilt so far so that you do not get it glugging. The tap 8ob linked to though should work well enough as long as it fits the drum, some have different threads.

It seems to be hitting that sweet spot where it's flowing nicely without choking the funnel which I can never seem to hit.

Hopefully it will. Was thinking of modifying a cap from a 20L container, but they have a slightly finer thread, so that would be a bodge at best if I did that. Hopefully that tap will be the same diameter and pitch as this one.

That tap in my link is only an example Matt, from our factors they are about a £1 a pop if you buy ten at a time. They have saved a fortune in fluid spills/waste over the years and that is not to mention the mess.

Put a hole in the top to let air in as the liquid exits so it pours smoothly.

I might have some of those in the shed from my cutting days, certainly got the taps for a 205l drum. Will look tomorrow, today. It’s today now!

pour it into a 2 gallon builders bucket first, then into your 5l via a funnel.

My dad showed me this when I was a teenager and I must have shown at least 50 other people over the years. You just have to be brave getting it started and you get very little splash.

I still get a kick out of watching their eyes light up when I pour 5 gallons of diesel into a normal genny spout from a couple of feet up and it all goes in the hole.

I usually put the larger container(20/25L) on the top of a bench and hold the smaller container as close as I can to the cap hole of the larger container and slowly tilt forwards.

Personally I think holding the containers close is not a great idea, much better to have maybe 300mm distance between drum and target as you tend to not overshoot that way.

This image shows why having a distance between drum and target is better, the liquid is much smaller diameter further away from the container so hitting the target is easier.

^^^ There are things called drum pumps that fit onto a 20 or 25 liter drum. Just screw onto where the cap goes on and pump away, no mess. Maybe they are only here as we do everything upside down. Have one on a oil drum can take a pic and post if anyone is interested
