Powdercoat supply and flocking question

Hi, iv used this forum for a while now for information on welding tips and electrolysis tank so decided its about time to join and try get more involved.

iv had a DIY powder coating setup for a bit now (just small easy parts) but im struggling to find powder as its about time i tried bigger bits and some wheels, at the moment the prices are from £7-8 per half kilo to £20 ish for kilo, i know a couple of people who have worked doing powder coating and they both said they was paying around £3 per kilo for basic unnamed colours but anything up to £20 per kilo for colours like letterbox red and Kawasaki green ect ect.

any one know of any suppliers ? i have looked and searched for a while now.

also

something that someone suggested is trying out flocking (i want my dash and parts doing in my track car project) due to it been a similar process, is it possible to get the gun/shaker type bit and use the unit from the powder coating machine ?

the microflocker unit seams very expensive but looks very similar to what i use.

Any help/comments/links would be great full

couple of bits of info on there for a few bits il be looking at later, but sadly there prices for all the products i looked at from kits to powder seam abit high compared to what iv been using.

DIY setup, electrostatic magic, i took a picture the other day when i got a stand for it, (fits nicely under my work area and the sides extend),

i need to buy a few more cups and cheap powder to cover my wheels, bottom arms, tie arms, ARB, direct to box internal gear linkage (already starting to go rusty) probably rear axle and if i feel confindent enough my engine/box

so far on all the bits iv done no problems, but also read up and advised to remove the end piece (spreader ?) if i need to

I removed the end piece, now 10psi get's a lovely small cloud of powder, rather than it going every where. I also pulled the extrusion out of the barrel and ground some off the back of it, took the flat off the back, so now it doesn't catch loads of powder and suddenly burp out a cloud of powder.

Try your local powder coaters for powder.
I tried three and they made excuses, ranging from "sorry mate we don't use black" to "we have run out of powder". One coater ranted how I was stealing the food out of his kids mouths!
Then I tried one and he let me have a ice cream container of black and a container of epoxy primer for £5, he did say the epoxy was very expensive, something like £8 a kilo.

The names below all replied with prices on small qt's of powder.
there is also suziluv on ebay, I bought 5kg of matt black for something like £10 from her/him, not yet used any of it, I only seem to use gloss black and epoxy..

There is also CROMADEX, they quoted me a really high high price though.

The mods both of you have had to do to make an electrostatic magic gun work put me right off. I've not read a single post anywhere, that says they work out the box.

That's why I bookmarked the Caswell gear, more expensive but appears from the forums to be a better setup.

As for Powder I'm luckly to get on well with my current powdercoat guy, although that might change

I have the eclectrostatic magic machine and found it to be pretty good tbh. Done a few items and they have come out pretty well.

Only small items mind as its a tiny oven unit that I have for baking the items after coating.

How is your oven setup/made of?

at the moment mine is straight out of the box, i haven't modded it yet in anyway but i probably will take the end off later, not a hard job

as iv only been doing small parts curing hasn't been a problem with normal house hold oven and heaters (heat gun idea was a fail for me im afraid), i am in the process of working out a homemade oven, not sure how that will turn out yet

They have a fluidizer to dry and repowder it, well I think that's what it does?
I think it just gently bubbles air though it.

I nearly added to my post.
The bloke I got powder from said he didn't use powder over 3 months old on industrial jobs, he didn't give me any reasons. He said if I was to give him
some notice he would sort me out a box of over 3 months old powder; it sounded like I was going to get it for nothing. By sort out he was going to run some to make sure it was OK.
He also said he only uses akzo and tiger powders, well he gave me two names but I am sure I saw tiger, akzo and interpon boxes?

The gun worked out of the box, these cheap guns are probably all very similar.
the electrostatic magic gun is a PC03, or is that PC02, the units were originally red[like the harbor fright ones?] but have been re-coated grey the circuit boards have the PC03 or whatever marking on them.

An oven should be dead easy to make. I got a domestic oven and stripped all the switches and wiring out as it was all over the place, I replaced the switches with a 99p pid from ebay, which doesn't work in pid mode, in on off mode it holds the temp to a few degrees, I have another independant thermocouple in the oven to see the temp.. So you get a few ovens, easy enough to get for free and they give you the elements then make a box to house the elements, I am sure there must be more to it..

powder can settle and go rock hard i used to work in a powder coat place a few years back and we had regular spring cleans to sort the boxes out. no idea what we payed as our boss was sneaky to say the least!!

To build on this I've added a socket to the front of the machine so my powder gun is now removable from the front of the box. When I get round to it I'll make a flocking shaker which will avoid the lumps which will take the power from the powder coating box rather than from the HT units I've built hand held flockers from before.

A piece of kit like the microflocker can be made for less than £50 if you are a bit handy. How they get the retail price (£450?) is beyond me.

I have been reading this thread with interest. I bought a similar powdercoating machine a couple of years ago, but have never even switched it on! Now my workshop is finally coming together, I should be able to get a few toys out to play with.

thats great news fergus, i did think about trying it with the gun but then decided i best not risk it mainly for the cleaning out,

i have been working on an air fed DIY gun/shaker today that i hope i can use the wire/s from the powder coat gun and attach to my home made one, and use the ground and pedal from the unit as normal, sound about right so far ?

Any one know what is in the gun part on powder coat gun, any electrics/wires or is it just metal that the main wire from the unit goes to ?
